First one, you really are getting what you pay for. It looks old and tired, but at < £1500 probably cant grumble. Dont like the way he insists you view before buying - Sounds knackered to me. D2's sadly are prone to gearbox failures around that mileage, so would be checking that out very carefully. It has sports seats, but isnt a sport......

The second one is a 3.7, with panel damage and no LPG ?. I dont think the 3.7 gets realistically much more MPG than the 4.2, so its not really the one to go for. It also misses out on toys as the guys that have money to splash on options start with the 4.2.

If you can stretch to it, consider carefully Richards 4.2 D3 here:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4254 - Its low mileage and high spec makes it a nice car to own, and will hold better residuals than others you see. Richard could do to move it on now he has his new one, so he might be open to offers.

Hi IT,

Thks I bear your advice in mind - when considering the ebay cars.

As for Richards - its the 2nd time I seen u mention his car for sale, its good admin is looking after their members interest too - or do u get commission ;)

IT 1st March 2012 12:17 PM

No, no commision, just dont want to see a really nice car sold via public advertising to some muppet who doesnt really appreciate it for the good example it is....

All 8's are not created equal, and it pains me when I see nice ones ending up in the hands of someone who just wanted a 'big audi' and doesnt care about all the extra cool stuff it has !

Great car condition for its age +++
Mileage, price and service book enticing, but a bit too old for me - sorry.
Hope u had a good hols though.

Thks.

With your budget, this one would be at the top of my 'to see' list

Don't dismiss A8 pilots car because it is a 96 as I noticed the LPG'd one you posted a link to was a 99, they are both pre facelift, so 2-3 years age difference isn't as important as the fact A8 Pilots car has the more reliable 4 speed gearbox.

In my opinion, go get yourself a 3.0 TDI D3 A8. +++

Sorry Amar... IMHO he should buy mine :)

Sarg which one?
Arggghhhh...i was all set to buy a £2k ds 4.2 quattro sport auto lpg....until..
I saw daviesbike (no lpg)
Then a nice 2003 3.7 quattro (no lpg) but only £4400
And now many on this forum are saying get a diesel
IT (admin) recommends a S8 too (nice one IT).
....so many choices!

Right, I think I have my requirements below:
1. £2k for a D2 4.2 Quattro Sport Auto LPG
or
2. £4k for a D3 quattro auto (preferably sport / lpg)
or
3. A diesel if someone can find one that does 40+ mpg for a quattro auto

Am I being realistic here?

1) - Yes, but they're not easy to come by 2.8 LPG seems more common for some reason.

2) - £4K is optimistic for one with LPG. You might scrape a tired D3 for 4K, but really you want to budget 5K for anything worth having, then LPG on top.

3) - My 3.0 Tdi A8 is a 56 plate and does between 35 and 42 depending on your driving. Yes, you can scrap 50mpg, but its hard work! The first D3 diesels were the 4.0 Tdi which has a less reliable engine, and MPG is average about 28 iirc. the 3.0 Tdi didnt come out till about 2005, but you'll be looking above your budget for one of those I'm thinking....

Sorry. The problem is, you basically want what everyone else does!

A high spec, reasonable mileage, well serviced, not too old, cheap to run luxury limo.. +++
