That looks very nice indeed. The colour is sublime.

Good luck +++

It is very nice colour indeed. Especially in the sun. Refurbed the headlights and alloys too. Got a lot of on road presence which most modern cars do not have. Especially the build quality.. I can’t see a majority of these new eco cars still demanding respect in 20 years time.

Interesting point, new electric car lifespans are linked to battery life. IIRC, the batteries are past their best after around 10 years average use (with today's battery technology) and are usually uneconomic (with today's battery prices) to replace on a 10 year-old car.

So 20 year old electric cars are not likely.

Yet.

FWIW the car looks really nice, good luck.

It's more about recharge cycles rather than age. Bigger battery needs recharging less often so will last for more miles/years. Early Nissan Leaf 24kWh batteries last about 100k before dropping to 50% capacity, Tesla Model S has 75-100kWh batteries so expect them to last 300-400k miles before they drop to 50% capacity. Bigger battery at 50% capacity is still more usable than a small one as 8 year old Leaf with 100k miles will only do about 30 miles with a 50% battery capacity but Tesla with aged battery at 50% capacity will do 100 miles on charge.

Lovely car and lovely colour.

But as others said, has the gearbox ever been serviced/ repaired or replaced as that is the one critical item on an old S8?

Also the next big item is the cambelt, when was that last done?

smoothcoupe 8th January 2021 03:40 PM

Since I have had the car I have not serviced the gearbox, just followed the theory that if it ain’t broke why fix it. Previously to my ownership i Honestly don’t know whether this has been done it gets driven daily as it has done in my ownership going up and down the gears no problem. Again the problem with the tiptronic is an issue I’ve lived with and to be honest hasn’t caused me any grief, obviously this isn’t a good selling point but I just want to be completely honest and open about the car as I want it to go to a good home. Re the belt change according to the service book this was done around 90,000 miles. I’m not for a minute suggesting the car is split mint but I would say for 20 years old it is still going strong. I’m a reasonable person open to offers!!

OK, so cambelt is approx 14 years and 75k-ish miles old. That's a definite to-do job for a new owner. (From memory they're every 5 years, but can often be left longer on low annual mileage cars, or 80k miles)

It's highly unlikely the box has survived to that mileage without being serviced, replaced or overhauled, but on the off chance it has it'll most likely feel pretty tired and slow to engage drive in forward or reverse when moved out of neutral, so a test drive should show up for those that have experience of these cars.

Good luck with the sale :D

I’m not a fan of the ‘if i ain’t broke’ philosophy, especially regarding the ZF gearboxes. My S8 has around 196K on the clock, but i know the ‘box was serviced before my ownership (I’ve done around half of these miles) and I’ve had 4 or 5 ‘box services at Mackie’s in Glasgow (reputed to be THE ZF ‘box specialist) and each one has come with a clean report. After each service, it feels a little better, so I’m a fan of ‘if it ain’t broke, service it anyway’ school.
That said, for £3k, if I had somewhere to put this car and wanted to risk a divorce, I’d snap kit up - it’s a beauty!
BTW, my first ‘8 (a 2.8 Q sport) was a very pale blue (crystal blue) and had the very dark blue leather interior (I loved it), but I think this one looks like black.

MikkiJayne 8th January 2021 09:05 PM

With the ZF 5HP, if it ain't broke, it will be soon

That interior looks black to me too, but light coloured uppers is unusual in an S8 with black leather I think? My black interiors all have black uppers.

I’ll give it a few weeks if no takers I’ll put her in storage and use it as my next project next summer. Then keep it indefinitely. Too nice a car to let die.. shame because it drives lovely. Thanks all for your input👍🏽👍🏽. I’ll bear that XF box specialist in mind..
