Need help with ABS problem. 4.2 -03
 

Hi there. Recently bought this car and boy, what have I gotten myself into. lol. Anyway, have a bunch fault codes but the reason for this post is the red brake warning light and the parking brake light that appeared on my dash. Parking brake seems to work though. Here's the scan:

The ABS control module error seems to show up everywhere. I just don't know where to start. Can anyone make any sense of this?

Also, the ABS unit/pump keeps going and going after the car is shut off. Have to disconnect it to make it stop. Is it the control module that is shot? Relay(is that J329?)? Wiring? Can a bad module be responsible for some of the other fault codes I have?

A couple of things before delving into the VCDS scan.

Since you're a new member, pop along to the Introductions section and introduce yourself to everyone. We're a friendly lot, and we don't have many rules, but we do like to see other members cars, so photos are welcome. Also, to make things easier down the line when looking for assistance, amend your profile setup to include car details and a rough location. The car details may make it easier to help diagnose issues, and the location is just so if you need help, someone may just be round the corner, or maybe just to meet up for a chat.

Now, the scan. You make the comment about the ABS errors occurring in several modules, and it is remarkable how these cars work, and how they are all seemingly interconnected, so yes, an error may appear in what seems like an odd location/module.

The majority of the errors appear around the same date, but there some other odd anomalies around dates and other data. You have one error with a date of 2000, yet the car is an '03 model. You also have a error with a temperature reading of -85 degrees, which is somewhat chilly!

Since you have VCDS, what I'd suggest you do is always save a copy of the scan, as it may be useful later on. The next thing to do is clear all the codes (some codes may not clear is they are classed as a 'permanent' fault, and will only clear by replacing/repairing the offending item). Once you've done that, take the car for a drive, and then scan the car again, and you should hopefully have fewer errors second time around. Error codes can occur because the battery was disconnected at some time, and this could account for some of them. Post up what's left, and then we can go from there.

Regarding the ABS specific issue, and the pump continuing to run, one suggestion I came across was a faulty relay (which you hint at). I can identify the relevant relay on the D2 platform, but at the moment can't find the equivalent of the D3 platform.

The only relay I can find that is connected to the ABS unit is J329. It's the terminal 15 relay. Would a faulty realy cause all these ABS module codes though?

So almost all ABS/Brake errors happened between these 2 scans. I guess when the brake warning lights started appearing

I am new to D3 myself so not much experience yet but in general ABS pump should only be running when ABS/ESP/EDL is activated, not all the time. I don't think there are any external relays for ABS. Looks like your ABS unit is shorted causing pump to run all the time. I don't know if it has internal relay which could be stuck on or if it is activated with transistor which could be shorted. Pump running all the time could cause voltage drop in the unit especially if battery is weak and that could result in communication errors.

So your guess would be the ABS module itself?

The first time I noticed the running pump after the car was shut off, was on NYE(Dec. 31). That was the first time. Haven't driven it since(well, I drove it home). I bought the car Dec. 27.

If you are resetting each time, and all those errors are coming back - I would focus on the low voltage ones as it shouldnt be flagging up voltage errors on a good battery.

If you don't have a good battery and stable voltage, all kinds of weird things can happen.

if the battery is good, it might be a faulty or mis-calibrated power module....

You could try disconnecting the battery, charging it to full and then recoding the battery module to get things back in sync if it is definitely a good battery.

I wouldn't waste time diagnosing anything else until the power is stable....

The low voltage codes doesn't show up on my latest scan(1st post). Did a scan when I bought the car. Cleared the codes and went for a drive and scanned again(3 days later). The scan in my latest post is the 1st scan

Ian, are there any fuses for the ABS unit? Just wondering if it would be worthwhile pulling them once they get the battery charged, so that it isn't causing a continuous drain. That way they could hopefully clear all the errors caused by low voltage issues, and just be left with the 'real' errors. I'm not suggesting they drive the car like that on the road, but at least it will give them a better view of what the other issues are, including the ABS one, and hopefully not make it look as bad to overcome.

Some of the errors in the first post (most recent scan) are still old ones, so I'd also suggest going into each module and clearing them within the module, but as IT says, you'll need to get the battery issue sorted first.

If I wash the car in a automatic car wash, including underbody with no splash guard underneath the car, could that affect/screw up the electronics? I think the warning lights showed up after that. Not immediately though. Most likely not the issue, just speculating

Nothing is impossible, but I would highly doubt it, as all the electrical connectors on the outside of the car are designed to prevent water ingress. I've used car washes in the past without issue.

If you're concerned that water may have been the issue, I'd check the plenum chamber in the engine bay to ensure it isn't full of water, and I'd also check the carpets in the front to see if any water has gotten into the car.

Ok. The battery is now fully charged. I connected the ABS unit again just to test. Still running. Now, there's no point in doing a scan with the ABS unit disconnected because it's gonna throw all kinds of codes and I don't know what's what. Should I leave the charger on and connect the ABS unit and do a scan? If I pull the fuses, isn't that the same as disconnecting the unit?

And just to be sure, there's no external relay dedicated to the ABS unit? If all these things are fine(fuses, relay), then it's leaning towards the ABS module no?

EDIT: Just opened the driver side fuse box and it's all wet. All the fuses seem fine when I check with a multimeter but that can't be good. Coming from the upside and been running down over the fuses and inside the contacts on some

Oh no! I would disconnect the battery and see if you can take that fuse panel off completely. I would then try and clean all the contacts with IPA as that would help rust preventing. Obviously get to the root of the leak too+++

Check the plenum chamber for water too. My 2003 D3 had a water ingress problem that caused all manner of weird things to happen and was absolutely solid once it was cleared up.

I dried out the fuse box, sprayed som electronic spray on there, replaced all the fuses and even the J329 relay which feeds the ABS unit and a bunch of other things. It's the terminal 15 relay. Pump is still running. Maybe there's a short circuit in the module or something.

It has fixed a bunch of other things though. Like the steering wheel adjustment when you turn on/off the ignition, the child lock for the rear windows etc. But I need to find the source of the leak. Are there any drain holes around there that could be clogged?

My friend is currently repairing the ABS module. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem

Well, the repair didn't work, it still runs. It did have some damage though. Maybe the only way is to get a used working one and try. Thing is, I can't find one for a decent price. Anyone?

My engine coolant reservoir has a small split in it and when the system became pressurised it caused it to leak.

It eventually trickled down on the ABS module and caused all manner of problems..

Might not be this but no harm in checking.

In the end I replaced the module and had it coded and never had a problem since.

That's not impossible. I just replaced the coolant reservoir because the fitting on the reservoir where you put the hose on was broken in half so one piece was stuck in the hose and then they had just glued it together on the reservoir again. It was for the upper hose that runs to the back of the engine.

The ABS module didn't seem wet though. If this doesn't work then I'll have to get a new/used one.

it's not usually the ABS block that causes the issue is the actual electric module that causes problems.

you can replace just the ECM if I remember correctly. However, if you're buying this used, they often come attached and sold as 'one'.

You'll need someone quite handy to code it all in once you're done.

Yeah, I've been looking for a used one and they're all sold as one. Cheapest I could find is like $300. I can just remove the module and use just that one. Thing is, if I just switch out the module then I've to have the exact same one(number) as my old one. But if I switch out the whole unit with the pump, then there's a couple of alternatives I think.

It's better to have the part numbers match, as there is less to go wrong. I think there are other units you can use but you must read up first.

programming should have (in theory) been a straight forward task, but the garage could not do it.

In the end I called a chap over who does all VAG coding and he sorted it. It's worth pulling the code first before you swap/replace.

My car would often throw up ABS module codes - loads of other related bits would be affected.

Yeah, I'm waiting to get my module back from the 2nd repair attempt. If that doesn't work I'm crossing my fingers that @Architex_mA8tey has one laying around

Hello again. Got the module back from repair and it works :D Managed to get rid of all the warning lights in the middle display and fault codes regarding the module.

However, a new problem showed up. After I calibrated the air suspension(successfully), a new fault code showed up in the ABS module:

01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

Wonder if it was because I did several calibration attempts and the car was going up and down, maybe the wiring couldn't take it. I checked in VCDS and it has a constant pressure of 291 bars, regardless of if I press the brake pedal or not. According to VCDS that means "short to plus". I tried to remove the connector from the sensor and it still showed 291 bars. Does that mean it's the wiring or could it be the sensor?

Also, the ABS light(yellow), ESP light and parking brake warning light now appears. The only code in the parking brake module refers to the ABS module and the only code in the ABS module is the pressure sensor code. So could all of these warning lights be because of the pressure sensor code?

Isn't the sensor internal in ABS pump? So not sure what you unplugged.

After searching online it looks like it is separate sensor on that can be changed on ABS pump on D3. You can probably measure resistance at the pins. I don't know what the values should be but if it is short or open you can be pretty sure it's faulty.

Yeah, replacing the pressure sensor didn't solve the problem. If that wasn't enough, all the brake fluid went seeya from the ABS unit so I had to bleed it all. YAY! It's all pointing to the ABS module. One problem gone, a new one shows up. Guess it's time to try find a new/used module

I'm also going through some ABS issues at the moment and one direction I received from fellow D3 owners which I am starting on this morning, is to unwrap the ABS harness tape and inspect the ABS wiring between the ABS module plug-connector and the wheel arch area - this is apparently a known issue leading to all sorts of strange ABS faults including intermittent issues.

Regarding defective ABS Module the 'safest' reasonably priced option so far for a 'known' ABS module repair is to use one of the ABS rebuild vendors. You remove and post your module to them and they provide an exchange fully warrantied unit. There are several to choose from (Controlunits.co.uk / atpelectronics.co.uk / absrepair.co.uk / sinspeed.co.uk / etc...) and one of the more experienced chaps on here may be able to recommend one.

Note that most DC motors such as ABS pump motors are not designed for continuous operation and if you don't sort out that constant-operating condition (If caused by an external fault) this may damage your new ABS pump.

ps. the parking brake fault is also linked to the ABS system fault, so an ABS fault will also show as parking brake fault. Your VCDS scan has already shown you that. Once you sort our the ABS fault many of your other faults such as parking brake should clear once reset.

Having currently had an ABS issue, here are my findings.

The parking brake is part of the same system so it will sort itself out once the ABS unit is fixed. I contacted a few of the repairer/remanufacturers and they can repair certain faults. ECUtesting will pick it up FOC and test it. Their test fee is £45 +VAT but will waive the fee if they cannot repair it or if you decide to go ahead with a repair. All companies have stated if it is the processor then they cannot repair it. Mine was a rare part number and so was hard to find a replacement, yours seems more generic and so there should be replacement options.

Definitely check the wiring as advised, it is a known issue. The ABS pump itself does not need to be removed if you need to send it off for repair, just the module is sufficient. There are 6x torx 25 screws. Mine being an S8 the engine bay is crowded and I found removing my air box gave me much better access. I also had removed the inner arch liner to help me get it out. Ah sorry, I didn't read your signature. Mine was 4E0614517 BT which I am concluded is due to the adaptive cruise but not sure. Now here's the strange bit...I tried everything and eventually sent it off to ECUtesting who diagnosed it as faulty and a processor fault. Unrepairable. Other companies gave the same reply when I told them it was the processor. I opted to have the part sent back to me so I could put it on the car so at least I could move it and drive it until I find a replacement. Miraculously, all the faults have disappeared and having driven it to test on 3 occasions, all is still fine (famous last words!)

I will still look out for a replacement just in case. There are a couple on ebay but they are around £700 but include the pump, which I don't need.

Hi again. Still at it. Starting to give up tbh. Anyone know if I can measure voltage at the brake pressure sensor plug. If there is power coming through?

I've replaced the brake pressure sensor(with used OEM), then I also tested a new Bosch sensor but just plugging the connector in and checking the pressure. Still stuck at 290bar(doesn't matter if I press the brake pedal or not) and the same fault code(01435-electrical fault in circuit). Have replaced the brake light switch. I unwrapped the wiring from the ABS module connector to the wheel well area and everything looks okay. I've checked resistance between the 3 pins at the pressure sensor and the ABS module connector.

I feel like the only thing left to do is replacing the module with a known working one. I've had it repaired by a friend.

It's the only ABS related code left and both the yellow ABS and ESP light comes on when that code appears.
