Wide Display Cluster Retrofit

PICTURE GUIDE of cluster removal added below +++

Cost:
- as low as £195 if buying a used cluster from ebay for £100 and knowing right people to do CP removal and mileage correction
- to min £260 if buying used cluster from ebay and letting Audi to do the CP and mileage, BUT you will have to present some sort of ''legit'' in their eyes a proof of purchase which Audi seems to require in order to do it, and if you remove the trim for them. If you dont remove the trim they want £320 for it inc. CP and mileage, but prices do vary and my local Bexley Audi is know for being absolutely dog s**t, so in this case total would be around £420
- or as high as around £800 if you want to buy new cluster from Audi and have it all set by Audi

My cost was £205:
- £110 for ACC petrol cluster
- £60 CP removal
- £35 mileage correction

Tomorrow I will post a full guide of how to swap clusters for those guys who don't know how to do it or are afraid of it, don't, it is a simple swap and it takes around 10-15min. I managed to do two cars in under 25min.

So, after talking to my ex-Audi MTs they strongly recommend to get the correct cluster and don't bother with swapping the RPM's or SPEEDO discs from Diesel to Petrol or vice versa or KPH to MPH and vice versa.

From their experience on other Audi's the needles after removing and resitting will shake and give not accurate readings.
Plus, it's not tested if petrol cluster will work on diesel car after CP removal and coding.

What I have tested is if you for example have a patrol car with small display and spare cluster with wide display from another petrol car, that you CAN'T avoid CP removal and mileage correction by swapping the LCDs.
I've tried, swapping LCDs with it's individual power supply PCB, but no luck.
Display will be showing funny lines aven after playing with all the coding and adaptation options.

Below you see a petrol wide dis and petrol small dis clusters during the swap process.
Plus few extra photos if you are interested to know what's inside.

Differences.
So far I haven't found a single function being better on small dis than on a wide dis cluster :D , obviously

Benefits.
Main one is the look, absolutely amazing transformation and as I like to say more modern look.
Full track names (if you record CD text of course )
Full street and road names
When pressing MODE button on the steering wheel to get to the Telephone functions, MPGs and outside temp still displayed at the bottom of the screen, plus you will see signal bars at the top of the screen, not only on the main MMI screen
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1416169998
When fuel light or and screenwash lights comes on they wont take over the top part of your screen anymore, they will display on the sides.top corners so you can still benefit from full track names, temp etc.
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1416169998
Better Nav mode, in my opinion.
When displaying any of the Trip Computer functions it will actually says at the top Trip Computer 1 or 2
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1416169998

Quick Note
If you can buy or have no option then buying a Cluster with ACC and you have only CC installed, not ACC, then you can still go ahead with swapping a CC cluster to one with ACC LEDs around the speedo and additional ACC light on the speedo disc (both functions are greyed out and not visible when ACC is not active/installed)
Your CC will still work, but the Green CC Light (speedo symbol) will no longer come on even if it is still present on ACC cluster.

Also immediately after installing new ACC cluster and removing CP and coding it there will be a message on the bottom the display saying ''ACC not available''
This isn't a problem at all. You will need VCDS cable to deactivate this function/code out ACC function from the cluster.
To do that:
- switch ignition ON
- plug VCDS cable in
- go to [17] Instruments
- then Security Access
- click on the box where you need to type in Security Cody in order to get your code in a pop up window and type that in. Security Code is needed in order to enable Adaptation functions
- click Do It
- then go Adaptation and select ''ACC'' from the drop down menu
- change Test Value from 1 (ACC active) to 0 (ACC inactive) and press TEST and then SAVE and OK to save.
- Exit control module and VCDS and you are done. No more message ACC not available

BEFORE Coding-out ACC from the cluster
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1416169998

AFTER Coding-out ACC and test drive in CC mode where CC Green Symbol isn't present anymore
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1416169998

It's good to have ACC-ready cluster in case you have no ACC and thinking about retrofitting it at some point in the future.
I'm not the biggest fan of CC or ACC only because I like having full control of the throttle even on motorways, but it was a good deal to buy ACC wide dis cluster for £110 hence I've got one.

Tomorrow I will write a guide inc. photos of how to swap clusters.

I hope someone will find this guide useful +++

Stunning work Marcin.

You rule.

mannyo 16th November 2014 09:15 PM

Got there in the end, looks like mine now.

Delboy 16th November 2014 09:43 PM

Good work Marcin

Did you get the MPH display in the middle of the DIS?

M-A8 16th November 2014 09:45 PM

Cheers David, Mannyo and Del +++

Del, no or not yet. Will look tomorrow at all Adaptation channels and see if I can activated somehow or possibly this function appeared in MMI under Instrument Cluster in Trip Computer 1 and 2 selections of options to display after installing wide dis cluster.

Is it know for this option to be available on models with MMI 2G??

Delboy 16th November 2014 09:49 PM

It works on mine but that was always widescreen from new, but if you need to compare settings you only need to ask

M-A8 16th November 2014 10:01 PM

If I don't get anywhere tomorrow you can rest assured that I will ask :D+++
Also, I remember you can get in VCDS a tick menu where you can select and deselect certain options so I wonder if this is the case with MPHs.

Also, it could be a Green Menu option/tick ??

Will update everyone tomorrow after taking some photos for the cluster removal guide +++

Architex_mA8tey 17th November 2014 12:24 AM

I've done the same thing as you Marcin and installed a widescreen ACC DIS dash in one of our D3 LWB's and I've got the ACC coded out also like you. I'm struggling to get the Large speedo readout in the DIS too, we've looked a fair bit and I'm beginning to wonder if it's not possible on an ACC dash, let me know if you solve it +++

ScottD3 17th November 2014 07:16 AM

Cracking job.

I really want a widescreen DIS.
Even more after seeing yours and Architex-MA8tey's A8.

I drove a S3 with that enabled and it was lovely.
I thought the speedo display for the 2nd facelift clusters?

M-A8 17th November 2014 10:13 AM

Morning all

I did wonder if that isn't the case, but Del's S8 is pre 2009 and he has it.
Maybe it only works on cars with ACC actually installed and other standard bits like lates MMI ver etc. ???

I will have to dig through Adaptation channels and other settings and Hidden Menu possibly as well, i wouldn't be surprised Scott if that setting needs to be ticked somewhere there we had to enable Instrument Cluster menu after MMI update.

Delboy 17th November 2014 11:26 AM

My DIS is not ACC :( it is however from MY2007 but its an S8 cluster and that may well be the difference that matters.

I know other S models have unique features in there DIS so its quite possible that's why, but given time I'm sure we will find out one way or another.

mattylondon 17th November 2014 12:05 PM

Excellent work Marcin. Thanks for sharing your research +++

I noticed in your newly installed wide display cluster that the redline is at 6200rpm, lower than the original 6800rpm. Do you know what car this came from? I guess there are slight differences between clusters for petrol cars.

manca 17th November 2014 04:52 PM

Hi Marcin +++

My DIS came from a 2008 A8 and I have the MPH readout , it didn't have ACC.

Its a fab upgrade and really lifts the whole driving experience.

As an added bonus my clock now works. For the first time in at least 18 months when I got in the car this morning I didn't have to reset either the time or the date. On the downside I can't use it as an excuse for being late anymore, but a price I happily pay.

M-A8 17th November 2014 06:03 PM

Sh*t, you are right Matt, thanks very much for spotting it...not !!!

Anyway, mine came from a 6.0 W12 and 2005 I think.

>>>

Hi Adam.
I'm glad you enjoying it and that everything works as it should.
It was nice to have a little meet and chat +++

>>>

So, boys, we have a little pattern here.
So far 2x pre FL clusters both with no ACC and both have MPHs.
Looks like its not an option on FL models only or with MMI 3G, its available for wide display clusters without ACC

Anyway, I'm going in a minute to the car to do a deep search for this option and see if I can have it activated.
For some reason something tells me it could be a tick in a Hidden Menu

>>>

I'll post a removal guide this evening, just need to edit pictures and put everything together

Architex_mA8tey 17th November 2014 07:05 PM

Guy and myself already had a look in the hidden menus and didn't find anything that would do it, but please do have a go it's quite possible that we missed something +++

M-A8 17th November 2014 07:30 PM

Half an hour if searching and searching through all possible controllers, adaptation, coding, long coding and nothing.

So far the patter is:
2x ACC wide dis clusters (coded out) - no MPH
2x non ACC wide dis clusters - MPH available

All 4 PF (<2009)

Will have to study the MMI's Hidden Menu document properly because after translating most of the options in Hidden Menu there is no obvious option which would enable MPG function

>>>

Manny, what the situation with yours??
You have a ACC cluster with ACC installed, can you switch to MPH on the main display (cluster) ???

I have no MPH display, or gear info display in my car with PF 2004 cluster and active ACC.

I'll be at the fairmile on Sunday hopefully, your more than welcome to scan my cluster and anything else to help in your diagnosis. I'd like the full MPH and gear display but its looking like it's not possible.

M-A8 17th November 2014 08:25 PM

Cheers Manny +++

So far the patter is:
3x ACC wide dis clusters (2x ACC coded out, 1x active ACC) - no MPH
2x non ACC wide dis clusters - MPH available

A question if you don't mind.

I'm looking to upgrade my 2008 S8 from CC to ACC, the problem part here is getting a set of ACC S8 clocks.

Would the ACC PCB be transferrable from a widescreen non S8 or european ACC enabled set of S8 clocks onto my original widescreen?

Thanks!

Delboy 29th January 2015 01:16 PM

Changing parts over from a euro car won't help you, the dial with speed on it is different in the fact that the markers don't meet the outside edge of the face giving space for the leds to light up to show speed setting.

I have a set of acc clocks but soon discovered that it's just not worth trying.

If you approach anyone asking for a new cluster price ask how much for two because I want to do this retrofit too.

Duffy 29th January 2015 01:39 PM

That's unfortunate.

I believe circa £800 for clocks was mentioned before.

Anybody got a part number for S8 RHD ACC clocks?

Audi insist on quoting for a straight replacement for my non ACC clocks

Delboy 29th January 2015 01:42 PM

Yeah I heard about the same, would have to try various dealers to get a bit off if we were going to buy together

Some of them don't seem to mind others are just too Anal

Be interesting to see what Marcins contact in Germany could get them for, but he's awol again.

95% sure it's 4E0 920 981 FX for the 5.2 S8 with ACC, but please double check.

Duffy 29th January 2015 02:19 PM

That number seems fine but my local Audi parts chap is AWOL from the office. I'll update when I get a price for a bakers dozen of them!

mattylondon 29th January 2015 02:21 PM

If most of you are looking, you've probably seen this KPH S8 cluster with ACC on ebay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-S8-A8...item3cf14d3c02

Duffy 29th January 2015 04:20 PM

Yes but you end up with KMH clocks you can't change.....

Delboy 30th January 2015 01:48 AM

Now that's a sensible price imo

Maybe I should buy it and emigrate to Thailand taking the car obviously

snapdragon 31st January 2015 05:11 PM

I have ordered one too, thanks for all the info. and inspiration - glad I waited, prices of these have dropped £100 in 6 months.

daviesbike 1st February 2015 08:06 PM

I have both ACC and non ACC wide dis clocks if anyone wants any. A8 not S8 ones ive done a lot of changing around recently so have plenty of spares +++

Diesel?

snapdragon 3rd February 2015 09:29 PM

Hello, I got mine, need a bit of a clean as a big spec of dust behind the clear plastic - but should I fit it and drive to Audi? or drive with old one in and trim removed and new one in a box? If so, why do they need the old one? to witness mileage?

Also, anyone know any non-dealer who can remove CP with Abrites?

Architex_mA8tey 4th February 2015 01:56 AM

Talk to the master tech before you go thee and find out what he needs. I just drove there after swapping mine. CP just means lots of things don't work but not badly enough to mean you can't drive it there.

snapdragon 9th February 2015 07:22 AM

Cheers chaps, cluster stripped and cleaned and fitted.
Tried to avoid CP by removing Instruments -17 from CAN Gateway installation list to to avail.
With CP Active, the cluster works normally for about a second when you press START, then it goes dark and only the speedo works nothing else, even kills the illumination on all of the dashboard and stops the HVACs from lighting up (still work through MMI). The DIS is lit up red like an electric fire.

One puzzling thing is that the [0.0] & [CHECK] buttons would not plug into the new instruments, when I finally had enough andgot a torch on the plug, I found the plug inserted into a 'terminator' as though the 2008 car my cluster is from doesn't have these buttons? Anyone know what the story is there?

Just need to tap up the dealership now :-(

snapdragon 10th February 2015 01:57 PM

Well, Sytner Nottingham Audi looks to have had another big change of service staff including Head of Business - all the competent, friendly and familiar faces gone and now they all seem to change with every visit.

The trainee service receptionist (quite rightly) got a workshop worker to come and clarify what I wanted - he grinned and said it's not possible on used parts (with a haha! look) so I told them I knew several others who had done what I wanted to do without a problem, and he changed his story to: we need to upload all the data from the old one and into the new one (pause) do you have the old one? I said yes and he looked disappointed and said I know you have all the receipts etc.. but we don't take component protection off used parts for ethical reasons! (with a haha got you there! look) We just don't do it ourselves for ethical reasons.

I gave the benefit of the doubt and thought that maybe he was being cautious due to the trainee in case she mentions it to someone.

He then started saying that the used cluster had the immobiliser in it so I knew he didn't really know what he was on about - I mean, how can I drive their with another car's immob fitted not that that's the case.

***EDIT***Found a few indi options but cost more than the cluster so far, but there is one near where I work I'll visit them in the morning.

Adrian E 10th February 2015 02:26 PM

My local indy in Crawley is upgrading their systems to give them full server access to Audi Germany for doing CP removal. I imagine others round the country will follow as more vehicles that require it come out of warranty. No good if you're replacing parts as a business but need to pop it down the main dealer every time CP kicks in!

mannyo 10th February 2015 08:56 PM

I believe that M-A8 used these guys in Harrow.
http://www.audivwsc.co.uk

To remove CP from his cluster, they have done work on my D3 without issue in the past and Kristof who is ex. Audi Master Tech knows his stuff.

Went the 110 miles each way to Harrow, well worth it, great guys, in and out in 15 mins.+++
New cluster (2008MY) has brighter whiter and redder illumination too, and the quality of the DIS LCD is much more like the newer models. Very pleased with it and it has the MPH function without any VCDS work needed.
Just need to add 207,000 to the mileage!

mannyo 13th February 2015 06:08 PM

Thats certainly a nice looking display.

Architex_mA8tey 13th February 2015 06:12 PM

Looks great! +++
Out of interest, how much did they charge you for this 15 minute job?
Audi charged me £60 for mine and that was trade rates lol
