[A Story of...] The S8 Project

42 Attachment(s)
It has been pointed out to me that I ‘’forgot’ to tell everyone about new member of my family and I jumped straight away to a decoke and manifold flaps threads, so here it is:
A story of a 2006 D3 S8

Let’s start from full spec:
- Black interior with extended leather, Alacantra headlining, Carbon trim and aluminium pack 2
- Sport heated seats
- Wide dis cluster with Digital Speedo
- Bang & Olufsen
- Digital TV
- DAB Radio
- Rear View Camera
- Fingerprint Start button
- Bluetooth
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring
- Soft Close doors
- Auto Boot
- Ceramic brakes !!!
- Glass sunroof
- 4 Zone AC
- Rear screen and door’s electric blinds
- Home Link (works great with automatic gates)
- Twin mirror sun visors
- AMI
- Ski hatch

Just before the summer I was gasping for a project over summer holidays just to stay away from working like crazy like I always do and one day Del sent me a link to this interesting S8 up for sale on auction. It has been advertised as nonrunner due to timing chain. I thought OK, let’s see how the auction evolves over the next week or so, but very quickly realised that auction ends on my birthday, well :D we know how this is going to end.
Earlier on this year due to new business idea I had to postpone a purchase of a 3 year old D4 S8, I had 3 lovely examples lined up, but future and my family is more important to me than latest ish car…but just about more important by a tiny bit. So with a little grumpy face since then I was just hungry for something to do.
On my birthday I stayed at home while little one was at school and missus at work, I took a shower hour before auction's end to get ready for some serious sweating and I sat in my pants on the sofa ready for some fireworks. I’ve had million different ideas running thru my head about what to do with the car if I get it. Most of them made no sense such as taking the best bits for my A8 as I’ve been after all S8 stuff, and then sell it on. Repair and sell it, keep it and all sorts, I did not had a plan, but I was after some gamble/project so I set my budget to £7,111 for a S8 with some serious engine issues. WTF ?? some mates said, but I was sticking to it, it was my birthday on the end of the day and I was having it.
BOOM, bid of £6,600 got the job done and two things happened to my body straight away, a smile appeared on my face and sweat on the back of my neck.
I’ve been kindly asked to pay £100 deposit which I did, but also I have notified the other party that next day I am going to F1 Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone for the whole weekend and straight after that I am taking family with friends on holidays for 10days so I won’t be able to come for over 2 weeks what I've been told wasn’t a problem. My initial reaction was crap, I do kind of want this deal to fail as there was a bit of regret the next day, but then considering the money it went for, I said OK and I went off to Silverstone with my mate. Watching GP3, GP2, Porsche and F1 cars all weekend suddenly got me excited again, it is a V10 we talking about here on the end of the day.
So after holidays I asked my mate if he fancy a 500miles trip there and back to Preston to pick up a car with me (he is S/RS maniac driving RS4 by the way) ? He asked what car? I said S8. He was like hell yeah!!! I said sweet and told him to give me two days to organise things.
I booked a truck to meet us at the destination for 1pm and considering I haven’t driven the new A3 much I though what the heck, lets take the little one for a road trip. Surprisingly the S-Line seats along with the sport suspension on the little car has been fantastic, we both came back kind of rested with no back pains whatsoever. Anyway...

So, here it is, the first shot of her late evening that day on the back of the trailer and later on the driveway.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479413682

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479413732

And the filthy engine bay which got me a bit emotional.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479413763

So, the feedback I got was that timing chains need doing along with the manifold and both were clearly audible, but... I wasn’t aware of the full spec when I was bidding on it so with some mental support from Del and Scott the idea of taking the engine out and sorting the chains was on the table very quickly, mainly because of everyone telling me to keep her after not getting D4 S8 earlier on in the year. So a list of all the specialist tools has been made along with the decision of taking the V10 out - some said two gambles on one car, you are crazy! The only one guy who had his pants dry throughout was Del
.
First item on the list was to take the T piece and have a look inside the manifold to see what’s cooking there and oh well, this is what I found...

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479413795

...a broken inlet manifold flap with others, one row only tho, in a poor state as well and on the edge of breaking off.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479413824

So very quickly this evolved to a full rebuild of the manifold and deleting the flaps.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414004

I’ve also noticed a missing secure clip on the end of variable inlet flaps arm so I got all 3 replaced after quick call to Audi day earlier.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414036

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414070

But, because the manifold was out exposing all inlets in a bot of the coked up state, it only made sense to do the full decoke especially that manifold was already fully cleaned in and out, I mean every corner every gap.
So a decoke process took place with a great result.

So this...

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414109

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414147

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414174

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414207

…turned into this.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414256

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414287

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414313

And this is where it got very interesting.
After putting everything back together came the moment to 100% confirm that chains need doing and oh boy, what a surprise – the noise has completely gone. I even asked my mate to come over and listen to it and we both could not not hear a thing!!! Engine was just ticking over nicely in idle and mid range rpms with no odd sounds !!!
So we took a step back, had a cuppa and a smoke, started the engine again this time playing a bit with the throttle just to get the chains to rattle a bit, at least once, but they were not having it so we looked at each other and just couldn’t believe it.
And this was a game changer, now this car wasn’t going anywhere or be a donor or whatever, she was staying !!!
So on that note time came to service the engine and clean the bloody thing as it was driving me mad.
Off I went to Audi to get her a new oil separator and new coil packs.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414372

I have also ordered 10x NGK Platinum spark plugs and new air filters and started cleaning every bit of the engine bay inc. air boxes, hoses, harnesses, plugs, you name it.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414423

Spark plug holes were a bit filthy so I got them cleaned as well and fitted new spark plugs.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414457

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414487

But before I did that I thought it won’t harm sticking camera down the cylinders just to have a peak.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414545

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414545

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414545

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414545

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414545

Now it was time for the compression test on each of the cylinders to check for any invisible on the camera wear and to prove that mileage on these engines and any other V8s is a bit of a myth if car is cared for and well maintained.
Mileage is 160k.
In the meantime I found out the story of the car from multiple sources and car has been purchased on the 24th of December 2006 by a country man who paid just over £100k for it and straight away had some paint protecting coating applied (not that it lasted 10 years) and also had a very good tracker fitted. I've got receipts for everything, every visit at Audi and every purchase inc. two new S8 wheels after he scuffed them. My mate from Audi look thru the history and found no serious repairs done on the car apart that guy been to the dealer throughout the years 40 times with every single issue he though he had. Audi did tho replaced a complete steering rack for him what looked like result of him moaning, fair play to the guy. Don’t know what kind of business he was involved in, but miles were down to constant journeys London-Manchester-London, plus he had no wife and no kids so interior is in very very good condition inc. driver’s seat due to the fact he wasn’t a big man so wear is minimum as well.

So, to the compression test.
Both full pumps disconnected, engine position sensor located between the gearbox and engine underneath disconnected. Spark plugs and coil packs removed. Mate with the gauge by the engine..3 2 1 go !!!
As per manual when engines is new, the compression on each cylinder is anywhere between 10-14bar and the wear limit is about 9bar.
So I was well chuffed with the following result, which as it happens are almost identical (0.25bar off) to Del’s results on almost identical S8 with nearly 100k miles difference.
Cylinder 1 – 12.25 bar
Cylinder 2 – 12.5 bar
Cylinder 3 – 12.75 bar
Cylinder 4 – 12.5 bar
Cylinder 5 – 12.5 bar
Cylinder 6 – 12.5 bar
Cylinder 7 – 12.75 bar
Cylinder 8 – 12.5 bar
Cylinder 9 – 12.75 bar
Cylinder 10 – 12.75 bar

With these results it was time to put it all back together again, wipe the engine - again !!! (I know, I can’t stand myself sometimes as well).
Next on the list was suspension light on the instrument cluster.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414665

Thankfully it was only a faulty level sensor on the rear wheel which explained why @ss was siting so low.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414694

After sorting that it was time to do the suspension calibration while cheating on the values a little so the car can sit a bit lower by entering slightly higher readings, something I’m not 100% happy yet and it’s on my list to do – lower it slightly more.

That’s car going up to lift mode before calibrating suspension for the 4th or 5th time just go get the values within less than 5mm between the wheels for each axle.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414731

So after sorting that and instrument cluster showing no faults I’ve realised there is something missing here….ah yeah, chrome steering wheel buttons and my beloved custom paddles from US. Not everyone likes them, but I do, plus I use paddles a lot and they are sooooooooooo much better and sooooooooo much more comfortable than standard paddles it’s just unreal. It just feels so much better and more solid not like the standard A8/S8 plastic clicking almost identical to some budget gaming steering wheel.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414769

Next on the list were of course the tail pipes, another thing I can’t stand being filthy.
Here they are before...

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414806

...and after

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414836

Next were the FL tail lights, in my opinion a must on any PF A8 or S8, they just change the look of the car so much is unreal.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414875

After that she went straight to MOT station on the back of the truck for her first MOT which was expired before I even went to pick her up.
She passed with only advisory note regarding the rear pads being very low.
Ruining ceramic discs is last thing you want so I called Audi to get me a set - £275 with a good discount just for the rear pads, OUCH !

And here she is on her first test drive with the rear end looking sweet and clean.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479414911

This is where I was able (it was hard not to) to add the rear wheel bearings to the list before taking here to my Audi guys for a proper service, they were loud and giving a bit of vibrations.
Before the trip across London she obviously deserved a good clean that included leather deep clean and yes, the famous two coats of balm/conditioner inc. buffing between the coats and one on the end.
She only has been clayed and washed in and out for now and a just a coat of Maquiers ultimate detailer (she is still due a good wax).
Ah, and the wheels of course, I love my wheels !!!

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479415020

And obviously the engine bay which looked like that all over...

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479415069

…to look like that after.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479415110

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479415110

So the next was the service (over 3 days) where she had:
- Every door boot bonnet hinged lubricated
- Checked entire underbody and every component inc. any software updates
- Oil change and filter
- Gearbox service
- Dif oil change
- Rear pads
- Rear wheel bearings
- Alternator belt change
- Air Con service
- Brake fluid change
- Coolant change
- One of the radiator fans wiring repaired
- Suspension’s compressor piston ring changed

Then following weekend she has been visited by her two sister, one almost identical look and spec wise, and a slightly younger one...

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479415161

...where after some beers and this...

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1479415193

…we went for a little test drive in Ollies S8 to check out his new little exhaust mod and what a difference it makes just be removing two small resonators !!!
So following week I took her to Fast Lane Styling where Ollie had his done for rear resonators delete (not back boxes).
When driving around the city without getting pumped up there is only a slight difference, but when you floor it OH MY GOOOOOD !!! She sounds gorgeous!

Soon after that she needed also new brake light switch and been treated to brand new Varta battery.

To my surprise everything works, every Kessy door handle, every fibre optic mood light strip, all the electronics, mechanically she is good as gold.

It was a great great project overall, but I have to say a lot of it is down to fantastic mental support from Del and Scott, they both kept me going and shared their knowledge which made all this hard work not so hard on the end.

Great thread and pics and write up , well specced car for sure .
What these v10 s like fuel wise knocking about ....must be a bit heavy ??!!

What a great read, good things do happen to people, you've not only got a bargain of a lovely car, but you've lavished a load of care and attention on her as well - kudos to you, no doubt she will serve you well over the many years to come!

Two questions though:

Where do I get some of those paddle extensions from? I have the RS5 wheel in mine and would love to extend the paddles

When you say the exhaust mod, is that the far rear back boxes deleting or the centre car ones?

Keep up the good work!

Great write up/intro to your S8 +++

Thank you guys +++

She is quiet thirsty Lee, but that's what they are all about. I'm quiet odd, the less MPG I get the bigger smile on my face :D
I bounce around 10mpg, depends on the day, it could be 7mpg on a happy day, 12mpg on a boring day.

I left the back boxes alone, but with permanently open flaps. Just before the rear axle you have two small resonators, these are the ones you want removed and straight pipe put in place.
They are not extensions, you have to split your paddles. You keep the base with electronic switch and fit the new paddle onto it.
They are aluminium.
I have the Polished Clear Anodised ones.
I know a guy who is their distributor in UK and can get them imported for you for something like £200.

hmmm, are they easy to fit the paddles? might take you up on that after xmas (and when I get the car back with a new wing and bumper!)

The exhaust mod, DOH, I already have that on mine, same one as on my S4, and I still find it too quiet...

The little exhaust mod makes a nice difference - the exhaust sound is just so muted from standard. Of course if you want more noise then just remove more silencers :D

Glad to see the S8 is keeping you busy, there's always something to do with these cars!

Fantastic attention to detail as always Marcin. Enjoy +++

M-A8 17th November 2016 09:46 PM

Ollie, Johmed & Tony, thank you guys +++

Paddles are fairly easy to change.
Remove the air by undoing two bolts at the back, pulling it out and disconnecting one connector.
Disconnect paddles which are directly plugged in into each steering buttons.
Slide out both steering wheel buttons to expose torx screw for each paddle.
Undo each screw and that's paddles out.
Next push the long securing pin and you will end up with paddle in one hand and base with microswitch in the other.
New paddle in, secure it with the pin and assemble the steering wheel back in reverse order +++

M-A8 17th November 2016 09:53 PM

Thank you Sean +++ I'm enjoying it to the full potential :D

Looking forward to meeting you and comparing S8's one day, they've quite a lot in common. Wouldn't it be great to see and hear several of them together, you know what two sound like, imagine five or six on a spirited drive? ;)

Mannyo, Ian, Ron, Thank you guys +++

It has been a great summer overall, a lot of back bending, head scratching, stressing and sweating, but it was worth it +++

Ron, that would be great. As I told you couple of weeks ago, next time I'll have a little meet/BBQ at mine you will be more than welcome to pop in - that will make at least 4 S8s, where 3 of them are almost identical +++
We could go for a little blast on mixed roads :yippee:
I know yours, mine and Ollie's had the resonators removed and Del is not far from making the same decision - I may have to take him to same place day earlier :D It took them only 15min and after inspecting welds which they ask me to do I was well impressed. Nearly 2hours wait, although on the sofa watching car movies in their showroom, but it all was long forgotten as soon I fired her up.

I do note, reference my post on your thread about selling the D3 3.7 that the oil filler cap was positioned incorrectly, that on this car you have aligned it the same...... BUT I also note that the manufacturers instructions on the cover are aligned in the same direction! So its either me or Marcin and Audi that are wrong. I guess its me then :o

Do I now slink off and change mine.......?

I don't know David how it is on D2s, but on D3 it is either the correct way  or upside down +++

She had a a good wash today in and out and seats balmed...yes, again

So I thought I will share some interior photos to show the minimum wear in my opinion on a 10 year old car with fair miles.
Carbon trim has been well looked after with no fine scratches, leather on the doors and centre console has no wear either..but I put two coats of balm anyway and everywhere

Door cards are great apart a small wear from shoes (getting out) at the bottom on the driver side and few scratches on the metal speaker's mesh which drives my OCD mad a little so that will end up being changed again at some point for sure.

Here she is waiting with her sibling in the queue for a ritual Saturday wash

S8 Project

Fantastic write-up...!

I have had a low mileage S8 for 3 years now and like the car very much.

I have replaced the intake manifold complete...(£3000 in UK....£1000 from US...I think they are made there) Problem for me was loud ticking at 2000 revs, thought broken flaps but discovered only a slack linkage between the two banks.

Only other problem has been one of the front air structs.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind....

Is your power steering pump noisy...that is does it whine a bit? Mine always whines but displays no other issue.
and the second question, do you get any creak from behind dash when going over a speed bump and outside temperature is very cold. This second question I have researched but every angle points to a suspension issue....which it isn't. Stranger is that if I start the car without driving it, just allowing it to reach temperature, it's silent....as it is in the summer. Just wondered if you have either of these issues too.

Regards

David

I think you'll find this is likely to be top mounts, I've had this on my S4s before and its all on account of the heavy front engine over the struts (which is why the rear doesnt creak) - I had my first S4 taken apart to find the issue and its just where the rubber gets so cold in winter, as soon as it starts moving and heat radiates through the front of the car it disappeared.

It sounds even worse if you have polybushes as I have the same issue but much more amplified with the Track TT, its almost deafening but does go away. Sounds like a loud wet creaking if you will, like something from a boat

Funny you mentioned both issues as I am currently dealing with the power steering issue and creaking noise is exactly same as on your car.
This was happening on the A8 I've just recently sold and is happening on S8 as well...but...only in cold temperatures as you both guys said. It drives me nuts.

1781cc, do you think fitting new rubbers on top of the mount could solve this issue which is possibly caused by the age and wear??

When my upper arms were on the way out I've had almost identical issue, but it was getting worst and worst with the temperature rising.

My steering pump started making noise recently and because of the reservoir location you can't just undo the cap and check the level on regular basis, I've decided last weekend to remove top art of the air box and ducting to check the fluid level.
And yeah, my fluid level was below minimum so that got my attention straight away.
After removing the passenger side fog light grill I have noticed that both hoses by the intercooler have a slight leak pass the hose clips. One is from the bottom of the reservoir to the intercooler and second one from the steering rack to the intercooler.
10min ago I finished talking to my mate who has an Audi garage and RS4s have almost identical layout for the power steering system and they suffer from the same issue. This can be very quickly solved as it has been tested on many cars already by putting another (second) clip on each hose. Or replacing the hose with new clips but if the hoses are ok then its a bit of a pointless job.
What my plan of action is for tomorrow, I'm waiting for the steering fluid to arrive, I'll be fitting an extra hose clip on each hose, clean it all with brake cleaner, topping up the fluid to max and observe and listen for the noise to go away.

Conquistador 24th January 2017 12:15 PM

The creaking in cold weather will be the front anti roll bar. Part is about £120 on the A8

1781cc 24th January 2017 12:17 PM

I'd say probably not, I replaced the top mounts on my first S4 in order to solve it, but it didn't, its to do with the hardening of the rubber I believe, but I'm no expert, only what I experienced is what I can comment on.

The Track car has super pro racing top mounts (polyurethane) and they squeak like mad, I think its a weight thing combined with temperature. If the issue was something age related I think it wouldn't go away in summer or when the temperature moves up

EDIT: Just seen Conquistador's post - maybe thats why mine didn't disappear with new top mounts. Although that said, the TT has recently had an R32 roll bar fitted and still squeaks so maybe its a bit of both?

Here are the pics.
It's the hose behind which leaks the most and fluid runs down the hose where it drips onto the the engine under tray.
Fluid colour is nice and clear so I will be only topping it up.

Not good :-(

EDIT: yeah, the noise is at the top nowhere near the antiroll bar. I know they can creak as well, but not in this case

What an amazing car and write up as always, Marcin - need to come round and have a look sometime soon! Hope you're well :)

snapdragon 24th January 2017 05:14 PM

When my first ARB creaked, I could disconnect the ARB links behind each wheel and rotate it back and forth in the top mounts. It would creak and judder. I rocked the bar and moved it sideways and applied some silicone spray before sliding it back to centre - but it only worked for a week or so. I would probably try Araldite if I did it again to stop the bar sliding in the rubber.

Audi replaced the ARB for about £200 (need whole new bard as the top mounts are built-in). I had one winter of silence but the follwing one was back to creaking. It sounds like ship's timbers creaking behind /below the front centre console.

Audidothat 24th January 2017 06:59 PM

Mine is exactly the same as described, sounds like HMS Victory for the first couple of minutes, especially in this cold weather.
Soon goes and I haven't noticed any extra roll, bounce or movement when driving.
Cold start drowns it out anyway!

You'll have to ask Conan the Librarian to verify the sounds of old creaking timbers in HMS Victory! I understand that he was Nelson's cabin boy! :p

Found some time over last couple of weekends to clear some of the ''To Do things'' from one of my list

- replace both power steering hoses (coolant->rack / coolant->reservoir), inc. flush with new oil.
- remove snapped bolt on the T piece and fit x8 new bolts
- air leak - new throttle body to T piece gaskets x2 inc. x8 new bolts
- replace all x12 manifold bolts in order as per Audi's manual
- ''deep clean'' fuel cap area + new cap and fuel door stickers
- new oil cap
- fit new number plate she got from Father Christmas
- investigate engine oil leak
- investigate coolant leak
- update interior, door and boot lighting with led replacements
- ''sticky'' sunroof only from fully open
- lower suspension (VCDS)
- investigate boot opening issue which requires ignition off in order to open the boot  (something I have messed up somehow and can't undo it)
- new wheels
- good wash+clay+detailer

Power steering hoses.
I've discovered recently a leak on both steering hoses (both coolant side) after checking steering fluid level which showed below minimum.
Removing original clips and putting two new per hose has solved the problem instantly. They were Halfords Fuel line slips 15-17mm.
It's only then I've realised that one of them was a bit perished and I didn't like it. Thankfully it was the easiest and the shortest hose, but because there was a second hose going straight to the rack side I just couldn't replace one so I've done exactly what Del did. It's only thanks to his thread and help I managed to complete this without any major problems.

First fix

Audi's top engineering when car went for a new steering rack.
To be honest with you, I've tried separating this hose with clips off and I bloody could not do it plus I found very quickly a point of no point of splitting it so I left it like that
It was a very good joint.

Blue roll will hold the fluid in the system ready for flushing +++

It was a very late one due to not starting anything properly until around 12-1pm, but that day I just had to have everything done no matter what, couldn't deal with the fact of waking up to this again especially it was the cold 6 degrees day, from evening down to 2degrees. Plus I wanted to at least run the car for 30min to get all the air out, go thru sequences of full lock to full lock many times just I can leave only re-assembling for a cold Sunday morning.

New coolant to reservoir hose

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1487688918

I did put a brand new clip from Audi on each hose by the coolant side and they were not up to the job to my surprise, so I have doubled here as per original fix but this time 1x oem clip and 1x Halfords per hose and its all good.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1487688918

It's worth to read the manual here as it states the fluid only should be 2mm above the minimum when cold and half way between Min and Max when at 50 degrees C.

New manifold, T-piece and throttle bodies bolts inc. the one which has snapped due to previous damage or being stretched too far.

Here is the air leak on the throttle body. Had a good clean everywhere and the sealing flanges I have treated with a bit of autosol metal polish.
All sound no more air leak.

Also I have noticed that on my car comparing to Del's I've had a piece of foam missing from behind the fog grill light and couldn't find PN it ETKA as it was keep saying part number unknown. It was the piece circled in the pic and which was protecting the both hoses and their clips by the coolant side.
Only after scrolling down the list I was able to find the correct part number.
£23 and two weeks later it's still on the back order from Germany.

Fuel cap situation, picture speaks for it self. It was like that since I got the car obviously.
Good clean, new fuel cap, but door labels are same as the foam on the back order from Germany so I will just have to wait with polishing the flap from inside and sticking all new labels.
I am well aware that most of you would thing what a ******, new stickers ?? But I also know that there is few of you looking at it and saying that is a Good Job +++
Silly as it sounds, but it has made a big difference to my very often petrol station visits +++

I have found the way already for the fuel cap to sit horizontally already +++

New oil cap.
Just took the part number from a first model of V10 R8 and £26 later it was on the car - YES David, the correct way :D+++
It does look more like its the right place for her, not the oem black boring cap.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1487689412

Found the tiny coolant leak - alternator. This is still in progress, but it will be done soon because I just can't stand leaks !

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1487689458

Engine oil leak.
This one was a strange one because of the airflow thru the bottom grill above the engine under tray could easily create this image of leak by just blowing around the leaking power steering oil.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1487689488

So I washed the entire bottom of the engine and sprayed a lot of brake cleaner. I run the car for well over an hour and no oil so far, but after test drive bottom was covered in a little of oil again. So 3 more cans of brake cleaner later, spraying it from the top, both side and from the bottom as well to wash down entire engine block without the engine's under tray underneath I went for another test drive and nothing, another-still nothing, few days later with engine tray already fitted I have shoved the camera thru and still dry so it must have been power steering oil sitting somewhere.

Sticky sun roof situation.
Sill haven't looked into the tracks system yet so dont know what lubrication does it need and where. Sun roof will stop near the closed position and reverse back but only from fully open position.
Unless something has unfolded somewhere at the back and glass is catching it when goes fully open and drags it almost to closed position where it jams and reverses back. Need to have a proper look and stick camera there as well maybe.

Limited boot opening.
Bare with me here. In the past until I was VCDSing few weeks ago I was bale to open/unlock the boot with either engine running, just ignition on or engine and ignition off. I was able to do it by pressing the button on the remote control or button by the door pocket or by the grab handle switch on the boot lid. Simples.

Now in order to open the boot engine and ignition must be off just so I can open the boot, either by remote, door pocket button or by the boot.
Try to figure that one out.
Been comparing the old and new coding/logs and all is as it was before so this is still ongoing at present.

>>>>>
Also, if anyone knows, my previous A8 I was able to fire up with a start button, leave the car and lock it either by remote or kessy handle and walk away while engine was running and car locked.
I can't get this function to work on the S8 and I looked briefly thru all modules and they adaptation channels, coding and basic settings.
>>>>>

So there was finally time to swap the interior bulbs for leds as the oem look is really bad, outdated and sad yellow.
Went with these SMDs for door's flood lights and boot

Before going to fit new wheels I have also decided to lower her a little via VCDS. A process which comparing to my previous A8 was a much more time consuming. On A8 I've used the coding and then calibrated the suspension few times and it was all sound.
Not sure if this is only like that with sport suspension, but few times I've had to pull the fuse out for the ECU over night and endless attempts to calibrate the suspension over few days. I found out in the meantime that ECU will temporarily brick it self after few failed calibrations, then unit needs resetting and sometimes left for few hours, then for the ECU to tick all the boxes and allow another calibration a drive of min 5-10miles was required - I did 80miles to calibrate mine over few days.
First was getting one side to lower accordingly to the coding and calibration as it was sitting 10mm higher than the other. This was a pain, so I started putting default values for the front axle so it does nothing and concentrated on levelling the rear axle which after many attempts has finally came to only 2mm difference between the left and right wheel. Then I managed to level the front axle but this time I have scrapped the coding and went back to default coding and started using overestimated calibration values which has levelled the both front wheels being 1mm from each other but couldnt take both of them further 10mm lower and I'm still stuck at this point. The original 10mm drop using coding has remain but this is not enough so thats were I got stuck. Thats was nearly a week ago and I've done some driving so will be attempting the front again soon until I get what I want out of it.
...and after failings with lowering the front using just calibration method I went back to coding method and thats where I am now.

So, not only I find the wheel arch gap as ridiculous on S8 as on the A8, but also wheel's offset as well. Very weird look when you look at stock S8 from some angles. Typical sedan look with wheels inside the arches.

So I went with ET29 9J and kept 273/35's all round and it couldn't look any better to my taste, apart the frnt going down further 10mm

Here are some shots of car being partially lowered after a good wash, some detailer, new V10 plate and fresh set of wheels.

The boot release issue, I think it's something to do with the selective central locking. What is the current coding in Adaptation Channels 1-4 in 46-Central Conv.?

Phenominominominal attention to detail as always, Marcin +++

I will look all them channels again, but I never went there on the first place. I was playing with CAN Gateway Installation list when dealing with activating additional Media Players.
Will go and check it anyway, its so frustrating when you fired up the car and need to put something in the boot, key out-open boot-start the engine again.
