Exhaust sound upgrade?
Guys,
As this is my first a8 don't know much about it. Had mercs before and to upgrade exhaust was easy, I knew what need to be done easy, quick and cheap What would be a best way to get more burble from my v8, not too much I want it to growl a bit more On mercs I use to remove the resonator plus x pipe - left original muffler and it was enough for me Any advise would be appriciated Thanx |
Hi Borys
It is a bit tricky. Removing anything increases the sound drastically. Removing middle section and keeping original back boxes does make it sounds nice, but not very deep. So I would start with back boxes first. Here are some samples from stage 1 and 2 Both really loud so if I were you and wanted only a bit then start from the back and ask for not very loud boxes, I did because that's what I was after check this threads, you will find there links to video clips. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7206 here are some from the ADI. Don't think its as quiet as it sounds, its very misleading, its really really loud from 25sec https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_tOXYXZz94 mix of mine and Darren's with stock W12 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt02UFuu_NU |
Perfect,
Yours sound quite nice :-), really like it Thank you |
Borys, be aware, it's VERY LOUD !!! Videos do not reflect the real sound level +++

Check out my Jag S type Supercharged on Arden exhaust
That was amazing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMZc...zsquyuIOWqHFug and my CL420 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8ac...zsquyuIOWqHFug |
That sounds very similar, but difficult to judge from the video.
Are you after a loud exhaust?? |
No not really loud,
Just need to bring out that deep burble when giving it beans would be nice to have it quiet on constant speed That black CL was like that (resonator out and medium size back box) On audi I don't know what to expect :-) Why my stupid question in the first place Your tread is very helpful, starting from back box |
In this case start from the back boxes as you just said.
You could try CKS Performance in Harrow, they have a youtube channel with few D3s with new back boxes. I would strongly recommend Hayward & Scott in Basildon, but that depends from how much you willing to spend to be honest... |
I've heard lots of good things about Hayward & Scott too.
On mine (when I had it), I removed all the centre silencers and kept the S8 back boxes and tailpipes because I wanted it to look stock. AMD in Thurrock, Essex did the work for me. Made it burble nicely at low revs but was still able to drive it quite discreetly if desired, then as you went above 3,000rpm you got the loud ripping sound. Here's a short video (cold start): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzyP...ature=youtu.be |
Ollie, long time no see, how's things??
I did love your exhaust  It was just perfect. The S8 boxes performed well much better than standard petrol ones without the center bits. |
