Road Tax Prices
This is a little bit of a bugbear for me since mine pretty much £500 a year.
With the tax changing this month and the introduction of monthly payments I thought I would take a look and work it out. Used this web site. http://carfueldata.dft.gov.uk/ 12 months tax: £485 6 months tax: £266.75 Unless I do it by DD, which means its £254.63. Monthly via DD: £42.44 2 6 monthly tickets is £533.50. If I bought two 6 monthly tickets it would cost me an extra £48.50. 12 monthly tickets via DD is £509.28 6 monthly via DD is £509.28 If I did it via DD it would cost me and extra £24.28 Bit of random tax information for a 3.0 TDI on a 06 plate. |
You can get the monthly payment figures from the DVLA direct, put the reg number in the site below, then scroll down.
https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ You cannot buy a 6 month tax and pay by DD, the saving is because your actually paying for 12 months instead of 2x 6 months. |
I came close to replacing my D2 S8 this year with a newer D3.
The increase in road tax was one of the reasons I decided not to. I only pay £285 per year for the D2. Another reason was simply that I couldn't bring myself to part with it. It's been such a good car that I decided to spend some money sprucing it up instead. |
I pay £285 for my 2004 D3, if you get an earlier one its not subjected to the high tax bracket.

Still, when I do eventually change my D2 for something newer, I'll be looking for something a bit more than 2 years newer. I'll probably be looking for something less than 8 years old, which was how old my D2 S8 was when I bought it. |
I cannot understand why anyone would base their car choice on the cost of road fund licence when the difference is less than 2 tanks of petrol.
It grieves me that my tax is more than my insurance, but I wouldn't switch to a lesser car just to save £215 per annum on tax. |
i've got 56 plate and my road tax is still £285
I believe cut off was mid 2006 |
My Camper van costs £0 per year +++ (not that I suggest you all rush out and buy one though.............)

There was a change to the 3.0TDi just after the switchover which dropped it from the top bracket to the next one down.
