R8 steering wheel?

Yes Ian, I know I said I had absolutely no plans for modifying the S8, but...just wondering...

I'm actually undecided. I think the airbag may look out of place. But go on so we can all see

It *might* work..

On the D2, the multifunction wheels with tiptronic ran all the tiptronic and button signals down a single wire data bus to a dedicated controller that then put the signals out to the canbus, TCU etc.

If the same control signals are used D2/D3 then I'd see no reason why it would work. Yes, I know this is a TT/R8 wheel not a D3 one, but I'm willing to bet that like on the D2/C5 etc of the time, that all steering wheels would be wholly interchangeable.

I dont have a D2 with multifunc capability right now, or I could have popped a steering wheel off a D3 on to test.... :rolleyes:

I'm undecided too...
 

just wanted to see what you guys thought though

For me, any mods that I do to the S8 have to be both tasteful and in keeping with the original styling of the car.

Although this wheel is from an 8, it's from a "sports car" and is the next generation, which is why I'm undecided from an aesthetic point of view. Very tempting though... :rolleyes:

I have a 2000 S8, D2 - Has a tiptronic steering wheel, but not multifunction alas. I thought it a lost cause, but if Ian says above it is all run down the same wire....could a multifunction one work on mine then ???

I'd also love this wheel !

It has a dual stage airbag....Not good with a single stage controler and i somehow doubt the D2 has a dual stage ????

Oddly enough, if you only have tiptronic, then there were enough wires on the slip ring for the connections to run straight through, so you will have direct connections for horn, airbag, ground, illumination (for the buttons) and for the tiptronic up/down and these will go straight to the TCU.

On the D2 multifunction wheel, they didn't have enough pins to work with, so the horn and airbag still wire straight through, but the tiptronic and illumination lines were 'stolen' to create a databus instead through which they send everything....

Interesting point on airbags you make, that may well be a show stopper for fitting anything too new, like the TT MkII wheel... Shame... !
