AdBlue questions?

Not specifically a fuel and exhaust question but this particular sub-forum has had no posts and as it is quiet in here compared to the D2/D3 forums I was feeling sorry for it and figured I'd post here to prevent it from getting a complex or suffering from low self esteem...;)

In any case it is in effect injected into the exhaust system albeit in a very different way to petrol/diesel

Is there any way - using VCDS maybe - to gauge the contents of the AdBlue tank?

Reading up it would appear that you get a warning in the DIS round 1500 miles to empty, again @ 600 miles and then when you hit zero miles if you turn the engine off it won't then start up again until the AdBlue has been refilled.

Also you have to put a minimum of 3.8 litres or so to get it to register that anything has been added.

This precludes carrying a litre bottle of AdBlue in the boot to top up in an emergency as I would do with engine oil for example but might also be a pain in the arse if you just set off for a Grand Tour of Europe and the AdBlue warning came on a few miles into a 1500 mile trip! :o

I did buy 2 x 10l containers of AdBlue from TPS the other day just in case but didn't want to top it up in case it might be nearly full and it overflowed.

Not sure of the capacity but it states you can refill with a maximum of 16 litres.

Car was serviced at Audi Manchester in January @5k miles ago with the last owner but no mention of AdBlue on the invoice.

Shame it doesn't have its own contents gauge so you could see at a glance how much is left hence my question about using VCDS to check the level.

Anyone here have any experience of using AdBlue on their '8?

Thanks & kind regards,

I wouldn't worry too much about it. 1500miles is a decent warning to pick up some adblue, all filling stations seem to stock it now.
I don't think it would matter if its not OEM branded.

Like Joe2 said. Nothing to worry about. 1500 miles is plenty of warning and adBlue is available everywhere.

Once you've got an idea of the dosing strategy based on your usage you'll be able to judge when it'll be due some. Defo a good idea to fill it up when it asks for it, rather than just adding a bit.

I don't think you can do any harm by topping it up if you knew you were driving over 2k miles and didn't want the aggro, but as above most filling stations stock it these days, often from a pump nozzle dispenser. The challenge can be getting it in the car if the filler isn't that accessible!

I was in Halfords the other weekend and even they now had Adblue, it was on the same stand as all the engine oils.

Maybe I was overthinking it a bit but I don't want to pick up any en-route especially since I bought 2 x 10 litres of it from TPS last week!

I'd much rather top it up in the comfort of my own home than on a garage forecourt in a strange land!

Looking at the containers I bought they have an 'alcove' in one side that seems to contain a flexible hose/filler contraption.

Apparently you don't want to get any on your paintwork...

Also if I go to top it up and can't get at least 3.8 litres in it won't register anything has been topped up?

Technically then you could keep topping it up with less than 3.8 litres and it could still register empty which is why I was looking for a way of checking the contents with VCDS or something?

I don't know anything about this stuff other than it being another 'additive' to worry about, so bear with me.

Would the 3.8 litres be the minimum amount from empty, and not at any level?

You mention that the DIS gives you a warning at 1,500 miles. Would this be like the min. mark level for AdBlue, in the same way as you have min. marks for brake fluid or washer fluid.

If you then fill it up to the top, it should then clear the DIS, irrespective of how much AdBlue you put in. It just seems weird that you have to put in at least 3.8 litres to clear it. Just trying to think how it would measure the amount going in.

Be interested in hearing the outcome.

If all else fails, you could always get it coded out!

Hi Glyn,

Could you post a channel map and ad map for address 31 (engine other) with VCDS, I think there may be values in there.

GlynH 19th October 2018 06:33 PM

As usual I received no notification to this thread and forgot all about it in the meantime...sorry! :(

Well first off I have now done 11k miles since it was last serviced and still no sign of the AdBlue warning and I am certain I read somewhere the range should be about 8k miles?

Not even sure Audi even checked/topped up the AdBlue because there was nothing on the invoice and I am sure if they had looked at it they would have liked to charge for it!

Not sure if this maybe because almost all of my driving is on motorways?

Not that I'm waiting for the warning but for peace of mind it would be nice to know all is good so sorry steamship I can't yet comment because I have no experience checking/topping it up yet!

Matt, I have just been outside and tried 31-Engine Other but nothing was reporting back.

I tried both 01-Engine and 11-Engine II and have tried to attach the maps as requested albeit a long time after you asked for them!

Unfortunately they are invalid as attachments (.csv) so I will paste them directly under my sig as plain text.

Not sure if I have captured them correctly or what you were looking for is contained within but it doesn't look hopeful to me!

Thanks & kind regards,

And how many times do I have to log in just to post in my own thread?

I logged in initially just to be able to reply as expected.

When I wanted to attach the files it asked me to log in again in a different tab.

And finally when I hit the Submit Reply button it asked me to login for a third time before it posted!

I was worried it would forget my reply altogether and it would vanish into the ether(net) but it made it in the end.

Using Safari on a Mac if that makes any difference...
