Rear Brakes - Pads & Discs
 

Hi There,

Just did this on the my 2005 PF D3. Went surpirsingly well!

You need VCDS or similar to wind in the parking brake (hook up battery charger, follow Ross Tech Wiki/youtube vid). I initially struggled with it, as the caliper wouldn't compress back in, so put old pads/disc back on and re-did and bingo!

Used a big G clamp to compress caliper. The Star screw holding the disc on was a bit of a sod, but means the holes all align when putting the wheel back on so actually makes it easier.

Lift on the MMI and then Jacking mode and theres even a slot for a trolly jack on the D3 and it's high enough you don't need to mess with the Audi Jack

Actually a lot easier than on my old D2 with the rotatry brake tool.

Pair of black EBC slotted discs and red stuff pads and the braking is good, quite, smooth and efficient. £190ish all in +++

One pair was utterly dead, just starting on the rivets, the others low but ok. discs old. Am guessing that it had been previously done without VCDS as i got no dash warning until after changing!! Pads entered in as 10mm (they measured close to 11, but were under and am guessing a high value gives a late warning!)

There's a slot for the curved Audi jack, and a circle right by it which my 2 tonne trolly jack fitted into nicely!

I never noticed it due to just feeling for the slot with my fingers for the audi jack.

Doesn't sound like too much of a headache doing it yourself. Nice work +++

I just don't trust the standard jack which the car comes equipped with, otherwise known as the 'jack of death'. The thought of doing some sort of emergency repair or risky tyre change at the side of the road using that jack makes me wince.

I keep a cheap 2t trolley jack in my boot and just use that with an ice hockey puck (essentially just a rubber block) or piece of thick folded cardboard since the circular generic plate on the trolley jack won't snuggly slot into any of the shapes found on the D3 jacking points.

I've found the standard Audi jack not to be too bad on the D2's I had. Then again most things i've done have been in my factory with a nice flat concrete floor so pretty much ideal. I've always added blocks, stands etc as while the cars are light for their size i don't fancy one in my face (did a lot of gearbox work on my old one).

I wouldn't work with just a trolly jack in there either. 'elf and saftey an' all that!

Just bought one of these for use on the D3 and with a trolley jack. Solid ally. Seems OK for 8 quid. +++

Lee, just to confirm, run the VAG.com to withdrawal the parking brake, then compress piston manually to get the new pads in? Steve
