4.2 TDi engine oil capacity?

Hi there,

I’m just about to change engine oil/filter & sump plug washer along with air filters before a drive to Brussels later this week.

Car is a 2014 Facelift 4.2 TDi (385PS) the Euro 6 with AdBlue if it might make a difference?

I have plenty of Quantum Longlife III 5W-30 (4 x 5ltrs) but was wondering how much to put in?

I have seen 9.5lts mentioned but don’t know whether that includes/excludes the filter change and don’t want to under/overfill.

Can some knowledgeable soul please advise on the capacity and offer a sanity check on whether this is the correct oil type?

Thanks & kind regards,

Rule of thumb, put back what you take out +++

Then check the levels and go from there.....

I think it will be less than 9.5l, I think that maybe dry fill.

Thanks for the reply Paul,

I just can’t be certain what I take out as it will be going into an oil catcher that will already have oil in it and/or would be difficult to measure in any case!

Thanks & kind regards,

It’s a further pita as the D4 didn’t come with a dip stick!

I used a dipstick out of another v8 Audi, measured the level before the change, matched just under that after and then used the electronic gauge for final level +++

Well now the jobs been completed I can report that 9.5lts of engine oil was drained which included a filter change.

As the ‘MMI dipstick’ was always showing full I thought I’d put a little less back in as I never knew whether it was just right or overfull so it was refilled with 9lts of Quantum Longlife III 5W/30 Fully Synthetic.

When the oil level was checked immediately after the oil change the MMI dipstick was showing full once more which led me to believe it had been overfilled to some extent but now that I’ve done a few miles the level is now showing as 75% up the MMI dipstick so at least I am sure and now have peace of mind that I have the correct amount in there.

Hope that helps anyone else treading the same path.

Kind regards,

I've just done a service on my D4 4.2L TDI. According to all of the Audi documentation I can find, this engine holds 9.5L as mentioned above.

I have somehow managed to drain 13.5L from mine! The car has a full Audi main-dealer service history too - until now at least!

Even more strangely, the car has recently been displaying a warning which says "Engine oil low, add up to 1L, you may continue driving".

I have refilled 9L of oil and will see what the MMI system says after a short drive in the morning...

That's too much, I hope nothing has been mixing with the oil? Diesel maybe?
