smell of burning rubber

if I just drive a couple of Km at town speeds, then stop and open the drivers window I can smell what I would guess is burning rubber

as you would expect the tyre temperatures are ok , drive belts are not obviously hot

any ideas ?

I had a similar problem a while ago that turned out to be perished/leaking power steering hoses, dripping onto the exhaust. I would say that smelled more like burning plastic than burning rubber though.

You petrol or diesel?

Is this not a symptom of the rear output shaft seal?

Split cv boot flicking grease on to exhaust?

Could be something as simples as a plastic bag/tar spot got caught on the catalyst and burning off.

...Yes, I'm ever the optimist!

I agree David - could well be the rear gearbox output shaft seal which when it leaks fluid gets discharged onto the exhaust and creates a very unique smell

Over the years I've had that stink many many times. Always been a leaking seal for one of the shafts (rear output or either front wheel).

thanks for the addition of the front wheel seals andrew

before I get out and get under do you happen do know if that is an easy fix ?
or the part number ?
what makes the burning smell on a front wheel shaft ?
I don't fancy the rear output shaft job so which job do I hope it is , lol ...it is certainly looking to be one or the other judging by the frequency of the problem of shaft seal failures !

ps proximity sensors yet to be located ...busy, busy ..that's retirement
