She's home

So lets look at some positives here:

  • I finally got it back after 5 years, and about 35000 miles.
  • I didn't pay the earth for it
  • All the tech I fitted is still present, and works.
  • Its road legal & drives
  • It still runs on LPG happily
  • Its come back with all my service paperwork and more

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1447070740

However......

Its got a lot of niggly faults which my OCD will have to rectify. This is a complex build of an already complex car, so its not surprising that finding the Audi skills to keep it running have a been a challenge for previous owners. It doesn't help I'm a bit skilled when it comes to spotting things, so whilst its a long list, I'm sure many 15 year old motors would be in a similar boat +++

So here are my first pass observations:

  • Engine is ropey at idle. Very ropey. Suspect timing maybe. It doesn't pull like an S8 either
  • Wheels are not a bad colour, but don't match the center caps
  • Wheels needs balancing
  • Brakes are soft, no recent history of brake fluid change
  • In fact not much recent history of most service items
  • Heated windscreen has been fitted, but not wired fully, and is smashed
  • Climate module is sat proud of where it should be
  • It has two non matching rear seat entertainment systems, one not wired
  • The Rear seat entertainment DVD changer etc unit is no longer fixed in the boot as there isn't room
  • Spare wheel is poor
  • Suspect final drive seal leak
  • Front Armrests don't line up
  • Rear armrest bracket is broken
  • Sunroof control is broken
  • Headlining is broken at rear, multiple upper trims hanging off
  • Front bumper paintwork looks more like hammerite than a factory finish
  • Front grills aren't attached (but are present)
  • No lights in seat memory buttons
  • S8 emblems sort of stuck onto the door sills
  • Scratches on doors and bootlid
  • Faulty PDC
  • All 4 door cards hanging on by the tops alone / doors don't shut easily
  • Leaking screen wash
  • Aftermarket phone aerial fitted
  • Rear seat controls have been painted, and the wrong colour
  • Bad Tv/Radio reception - suspect diversity antenna
  • Broken glovebox light
  • Broken handbrake trim
  • Various marks to the leather
  • Heavy tint remains on the rear quarter windows
  • Incorrect rear number plate screws / plate flapping
  • Missing platinum foot mats
  • Needs a bloody good valet.
  • And then another bloody good valet.

But - I'm very pleased to have been given the chance to buy it back. In the hands of someone else, the challenge could look a bit daunting and could so easily end up nudging towards the scrap heap..... I put in too much time and effort originally on this car to see that happen, so will be righting the wrongs when leg and time permits. +++

Itch scratched!

If you like the wheels that colour I'd just pop the logos out of the centre caps (they just push out carefully; clean them separately with kettle descaler) and spray the whole cap a matching grey before refitting the logos.

As you probably know the logos tend to snap so be prepared to glue them back together carefully with Araldite. When I refurbed my centre caps I also gave a final overall clear lacquer spray to keep it all together and protected.

I must've just missed your ownership of this one, before i joined the forum? Did this pre-date the silver A8-to-S8 you had?

Any old threads worth reviving for a feel for what went into it the first time round?

I think I'd find it quite hard to restore a car I'd previously put a lot of effort into - it sounds like some serious time and effort will be required to sort some of the issues, but hopefully it's more a case of raiding the A8parts stock for a lot of it?

Good effort in any case +++

Maybe wires crossed, this is the A8 / S8, but it was always Ming blue. Build thread here:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1392

It was a 5 month build I think at the time, but most of that was working on the wiring looms and figuring out how the rear seats would work. I'd never seen them in action before a pile of parts arrived on my doorstep, so it was very much a case of build the wiring loom as per elsawin, then fit it all and see what happens +++

Interior wise it just needs ripping out, cleaning, and re-installing properly which mad as it sounds is probably just a couple of days.

Engine / mechanics first. Then interior. Then if all's well she'll get her outside sorted. Gives me time to source the bits......

I had considered changing the entire interior to black, but finding another set of fully electric sport rears, even in Germany, is proving tricky +++

Lovely colour +++

I feel your pain, I do not know how you can sleep at night with having incorrect real number plate screws. ;)

Looks like a nice project for you (again).
Have I missed something - what you done to your heel?
