Agreed - I've mulled it many times, but never actually got round to it - There are 2 ways to do it really, on ignition, which is easy but would be annoying as they may fold after taking the keys out, but before checking for passing bikes etc before opening the drivers door. The second way would be via the central locking, which seemed plausible last time I theorised this route as the central locking (aka convenience unit) has *that* many connections coming out of it, you're bound to pick up a live pulse even if its just the hazard warning lights flash.
The drawback in my eyes is the potential for wear and tear on the folding mechanisms, which are prone to seizure and cog-wear, so an override switch to only make it work when attending parties, meets and other showing-off functions would be a must +++
