PF Auto Lights Retrofit (G399 not G397)

Hi there,

I've been looking at the Auto Lights option on my 2005 PF D3 as a retrofit idea. Mainly because of the irksome beeping of the "Press stop to engage wheel lock" means then when i've used my lights in the daytime, it's very easy to forget to turn them off.

It seems that the PF didn't have the Light/Rain Sensor (G397) but the G399 Light sensor.

I can find loads of info on the Light/Rain - http://www.jimellisaudiparts.com/pro...K0955559D.html

But no part number on the G399 Light Sensor!!!

It appears to plug into the roof module so probably needs a short cable on a retrofit, but we're talking a few inches rather then anything major. Sits in a pre fitted bracket on the windscreen above/behind my auto-dipping functions (Really you order a car with auto dipping but don't spring for the lights!!!)

The Light switch is a quick press in the centre and twist to the right and it pops out dead easy and plug in one with an auto switch (got and tried, alas 399 error, looked and no sensor/cable just bracket)

So Anyone know some useful part numbers as i'm drawing a blank?

Ta,
Lee

Hi There,

Went in and spoke to the Audi parts guy and we looked through the system. Keeps comming up with 8K0955559A which is rain and light sensor!

Picked up the cable for £11 which is 4E0970291 and will see at trying a rain and light sensor off ebay and see where I get to!

The light sensor is not a separate part sadly.

I found one a while back but since I couldn't sell it I gave it away.

The cable for the rain sensor is also for the light sensor but with an adapter.

I have retrofitted both and it's easy enough to do the rain sensor too.

If you only want light sensor then look for humidity sensors and you may find a light sensor also.

I've already picked up the Window based light/rain sensor as that was supposed to be the part that the tech guys etk said for mine....However Rain was not an option on the PF D3 from what he said and I could see.....And yet the light sensor doesn't have a part apart from the rain/light sensor!!!

It's all very perculiar....I'm not sure what i'd be even looking for on a second hand humidity sensor to know if i've got the right on????

Hi Lee
I'm pretty sure there was only one type of light/rain sensor.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-A...IAAOSwnNBXY89I

I'll have a look what is it wired to in a minute +++

There is very little info about it I have to say.

Look like it plugs into front roof electronics unit and apart light switch with Auto function would that be it?
Would you possibly need a new roof electronics control unit with connection for the sensor??
There are CAN wires going to the roof unit so it's always possible that extra pair of CAN wires would come out from it (dedicated for the light sensor) and then go to CAN separating connector on the passenger side and possibly CAN Bus system would do the rest of the work - each time sensor sends signal to the CAN network that signal is picket up by the control head unit and switches the lights on as long knob is in Auto position.
???

There are definitely two sensor types.

The G399 (LS) and G397 (RLS)

Pictures of the light sensor are below.

The cable that you can buy for the RLS to plug into the roof control ECU actually only comes with the plug end for the light sensor and you have to order an adapter to repin it for the RLS.

PF cars only have coding allowances for the LS. To get round this, you have to get a newer (G or later) Central Convenience module which is plug and play,
And extend the data wire from the RLS to the wire for the wiper speed sensor down near the Central Conv module. That is what I have done and it all works as factory once the coding is changed. Naturally the headlight switch must also change.

Almost zero PF cars in AUS have the LS option as it was in the book as "coming home/leaving home light control" and no one ticked it as no one knew what it was.

Hi there,

Just got back to this....I'm really not that interested in the wipers as I rarely use the auto option on them anyway. Extending the cable down sounds a pain, as does replacing the roof control unit.

The light switch is a 30 second fit with no tools, turn, twist and pop. Fitting the sensor should be a few minutes too and having auto lights will stop me draining my battery and probably give other road users more saftey!

Any idea what the part number for the G399 sensor is there ???

There's only one part number for G399
4E0 907 262, PR-8K3,8K7

However, there are many part numbers for G397 rain and light sensor.

Hi Matty,

I Agree that it *SHOULD* be.....But it doesn't seem to be alas

The ebay link is to a rain and light sensor (G397) which is common and appears to superceed the G399 and yet has a different fitting, 3 pin slight odd rectangle vs the G397 which is a 4 pin plain rectangle.

I believe that MCS's pictures are correct and the G397 is almost round vs the Lollipop shape of the G399 (I have a spare 4E0 955 559A on my desk which is a G399). What quite the part no of the G397 in that pic however....
