2G to 3G MMI
How difficult is this?
Is it worth it? Anyone done this? Just an information thread (for now) but you never know...:D |
OK so a Google search helps!

I'm sure someone on here did it 5-6 years ago.
|
An ex-member did it with the helpof a Polish software engineer.
Very expensive and not the normal sort of retrofix that we enjoy. Eventually he stripped it out and sold the components. |
If that was THIS one ? then wasn't that a D4 3G+ setup rather than D3 3G? Or was there another one?
|
That’s the one the sprung to my mind on opening this thread
I suspect it’s not ‘difficult’ in a technical sense, but depending on whether any modules you currently have in the car won’t talk to the later system will be the determining factor in how many components need to be changed The later style MMI controls, screen, hard drive and associated hardware to locate it are the bare minimum that springs to mind Probably one of those jobs where having a working but crashed 3G car would simplify a swap |

Moving from 2G to 3G is basically swapping all the MMI components, along with re-wiring, and then lots of coding and component protection removal. Its been done several times, and is more common the A6 C6 I think than the A8 D3 It'll add marginal value to the car though, for the cost of all the parts and effort involved. |
ScottD3 did it on his car. Don't know the specifics of where the MMI kit came out of.

Thanks gents, some interesting info there. These cars are still good with their 10 year old technology although having a new A6 as a loan car certainly makes it look a little outdated, but not much. The annoying thing at the moment is that the maps are no longer supported for 2G.

3G+ gives proper 7 digit postcode navigation, wifi hotspot, google maps, google search, bluetooth audio streaming etc. |
