Coolant Fan Not working
 

Hello all,

On a recent trip to the city of Melbourne I had the coolant level alarms come on in the dash. I check levels frequently and have not had this happen previously. The stop start of the city caused the car to overheat as the fan was not engaging. Upon returning home (temp is fine on the highway as airflow is good) I ran a VCDS scan that returned the following:

18080 - Coolant Fan Control 1
P1672 - 004 - Open or Short to Ground
Readiness: 0000 1001

I am aware of the fuel trim alarms but the coolant fan is a new one.
Ross Tech does not offer a solution for the P1672-004 code but I gather it could either be:-
Fuse - checked and OK
Relay - Unaware of location, Can anyone advise Pls
Fan Control Module - I believe it is integrated into the fan
Loose Connection - Could very well be as I have just had the timing belts replaced.

Can any offer any advice on any of the above points or if they have experienced the same problem. It would make life a bit easier rather than pulling the front of the car...Thanks in Advance.

I've scanned through it but can't find any references to relays for the radiator fans, just fuses.

If the timing belts have just been done , I would say highly likely that the plugs to the fan and controller have been disturbed....maybe not plugged in or not pushed all the way home or a wire has broken on them .

You need to gain access to these plugs to check them as hard as it maybe .

Gents, Thanks for the input. I will have to do the hard yards by the sound of it. HOPEFULLY i will stumble across an easy simple solution.

Just noticed your location. When I was going through the PDF mentioned above, I noticed in a few places it mentioned 'For countries with hot climate only'.

Because the PDF covers all the engine variants and years, do a search for your engine code e.g. ASN. Once you've found it as a page title (e.g. 'Audi A8 3.0 l - Fuel injection engine (162 kW/ 160 kW - Motronic - 6-cylinder) engine code ASN/ BBJ'), scroll down until you reach the section where it shows 'No. xx / 14' in the top right corner. Some show an additional coolant pump, and some show additional wiring. Note that there may be more than one occurrence for the same engine code.
