Just take a look on your back lawn. That hedgehog, he's one of mine. The 3 mean looking squirrels in the tree? The one with an eye missing and a flick knife, he's one of mine. I'm watching you! |
I personally love boxy body-on-frame Mercedes G-class.
Touaregs, Q7, Cayenne, etc. are steel-space-frame chassis SUV, so not proper body-on-frame 4x4s. |
I know you said it should be VAG, but I still think the Land Cruiser Amazon V6 diesel is the best off-roader out there in terms of reliability and hardiness. Its got the amazing gear-driven engine, no chains or belts to snap.
If you can find the rare non-turbo version is even hardier, so little to go wrong. They look really good too. http://d1r57ja1amoclf.cloudfront.net...1997_HiRes.jpg My mistake, is a I6 diesel not V6. The non-turbo is the legendary 1HZ engine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_HZ_engine *edit* on the other hand the 1HZ non-turbo Amazon does sound a bit underpowered, maybe not a great reccomendation. http://4xoverland.com/turbo-charging...ta-1hz-engine/ |
I've had a 3.0d X5 since last summer and loving it.
It's not had to do any off roading so can't comment on that, but it's a brilliant package on the road. |
The X5 isn't designed for off-road really.. it's an SAV, not an SUV and BMW are keen to make that differentiation. Though, it's a great bit of kit. Not as practical as an XC90, but the XC90 isn't permanent 4WD and early models can have the splines to the rear drive fail and not be obvious until you try a situation that needs it.

+1 on a Touareg, had a lowly R5 version for 5 years. No bother other than a centre bearing carrier on the propshaft which is a common issue.
Lots of info on www.mytreg.com if you thinking of one. A Porsche Cayenne might also be an option if you are buying a petrol/lpg vehicle. They can be well specced and have small miles. |
