Wanted - A8 LPG

Not in the best conditions and without all the toys, but this could be my entry into the A8, then a couple of years time go for a top notch D3 when cheaper.

What do u guys think:

Not getting any replies from INTRODUCTIONS.

Can someone advise on the following:
1. Should I stick with a D2 or a slightly more expensive early D3?
- I do not know enough abt these cars yet

2. It must be a quattro (if non-LPG I can add that later), but is the 4.2 the one to go for?

3. What do I need to check (apart from basics - history, test-drive etc) are there anything specific to check on an A8 (D2 and/or D3)?

4. Main difference btw STANDARD / QUATTRO / SE and SPORT models?

Thks!

Moved to a new thread for clarity.

In order to answer any of your questions, we need to know more about your circumstances.

Are you wanting comfort, or sporty. Are you handy with a spanned and up for some DIY or do you want full audi history and service books up to date.?

Do you want purely economy, or is engine note important? Could a diesel suffice, or must it be LPG?

Do you want toys - If so what? The D3 has significantly more kit available than the D2.

Mileage preference, body colour preference, interior colour preference ?

You get the idea

Tell us some more, and we'll help you along the way +++

Hi IT,

Idealy I am after a D3 4.2 Quattro Sport LPG.
But, after much research I know these are rare or expensive and I am more drawn into the D2 after seeing DaviesBike car+++

So, due to budget I know I can easily get:
A8 D2 Quattro LPG, but with high mileage and many owners - something I just have to live with.

My minimum is:
1. D2
2. Quattro
3. 4.2
4. Preferably Sport (more toys?)
5. LPG
6. Less than 150k
7. Full service history (preferably Audi)
8. Performance important (since with LPG MPG not an issue)
9. Defo not good with a spanner (would be an Audi or Indy job always!) :(

Will be looking to part ex mine soon.........
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3807

Had a quote for LPG kit recently & it was £1400 all fitted. Looking for around £1200 now for the car as it has a few little bodywork blemishes. It's on 102k miles & a fully stamped book up to 94k miles. +++

D2's

Quattro - All 4.2's are quattro, A8 and S8. the 3.7 is quattro from facelift in late 1998. 2.8 was quattro 2001/2002 only.

Quattro adds drag and loses MPG, but like me you come from a subaru background and thus 4wd is a must. I respect that.

4.2 is a good choice. Very strong, few problems, but the most thirsty, obviously.

Sport spec gives nice sport seats, 3 spoke steering wheel, lower sportier suspension, full electric memory for seats/steering wheel/door mirrors, heated front seats, 7 spoke 18" alloys. Its worth having for sure.

LPG - This is the sticking point. I'm a big LPG fan, but often nice spec cars with LPG get run to mega miles and into the ground. You dont often come across nice ones with LPG already fitted. If you're fussy on spec, miles, history etc, then its usually a lot easier to convert the right once you find it, but it will be more expensive obviously. I cant see the value in converting a D2 now, it would be wiser to invest the 2K into a D3.

FSH is probably do-able, but unlikely to see full Audi past 100K. You're better off accepting the fact that its an older motor, and get a good check before buying it, then get it well serviced by someone you trust.

If performance is important, then the S8 is probably a wiser choice. Its significantly more punchy than the A8, albeit with lower MPG, but with lPG shouldnt be an issue. S8 has better standard kit and generally more toys too, but expect to pay more for a good one. You're as likely to find an LPG S8 as you are an A8 imo.

From everything you've said, Ranj's A8 was probably an ideal starting place.....

Hi IT,

Not really looked into an S8 - insurance is hefty enough on A8, not sure what an S8 would do to me!

Ranj's car SOLD already.
Is this one any good (I understand your opinion would be based on the information u can only see from ebay):
