'96 DIS Interface

A bit of a long shot, and I may be in the wrong section but does anyone know what the protcol is for the OEM radio to DIS for a '96 A8?

I have replaced the OEM radio with an Empeg unit and so no longer get the ICE readout on the top section of the DIS. The connctions are available at the radio end and armed with my self taught PIC programming skills I though I might be able to make use of this now blank top section for my own use, eg accurate electronic speedo. I don't have an oscilloscope so I wondered if anyone knew waht the OEM readio transmits over the DIS? Is it just ASCII RS232, or is it it's own Audi format?

Thank you for the link. I have followed through some links from there to VWPIC and this seems to be centered around controlling audio players via the CD controls from an OEM headunit. But I will have a sacn through their forums and see if there is any DIS info.

I have seen that image on Audipages and wondered too if it were 'real'. Hope so cos then it would mean my quest is possible.

From what I understand, the top 2 lines of text are a simple text based code (eg ascii but I'm sure life aint that simple) and then the bottom part of the screen can optionally be driven graphically, I assume with some sort of bitmap code.

Getting the text at the top to work should be easiest as that 'code' seems to have been the same in vw/audi for years now, as evidenced by the fact that kit from years ago still plugs into more modern cars and the text comes up, but the graphics dont.

I guess there is some sort of handshake to wake the DIS up and display your data too...

This is quite interesting for me, I dont have the PIC skills (or the time) but if you made any progress on this it would be very interesting... +++
