D3 boot struts on D2

Does anyone know if D3 Boot struts ( the chrome ones ) fit D2 cars??? Really like the chrome ones and i think they are stronger.

Gosser 16th November 2016 11:28 PM

I tried this and can confirm, the D3 struts do not fit the D2 trunk... I am now looking for a use for these things... They are really stiff too. I was hoping the hood struts would work, but the sizes are too far off. But I havent physically tried the hood struts.

Very interested in this.

I saw D2 on German meet 2015 with chrome D3 boot struts.
Want to install them on my car too.

The boot opens nicely in terms of weight balance and fully, so struts are are correct length.

Unfortunately I took only one picture, but I captured part numbers.

4E0 827 552 C 01S -- left side
4E0 827 551 B -- right side

Also saw another D2 car with boot strut part number 4E0 827 551 C 01S on right side. Left side was unmarked.

D3 cars have different left and right side struts due to motorised boot lid with motor located only on one side, so they need to be of a bit different stiffness.

It looks like the owner of that D2 purchased a full set from donor D3 without realising they are a bit different. But it was not noticeable when boot is opened.

I have mobile phone number of the owner and I can ask him additional questions.

I'll be also interested to know what part numbers did NOT work on D2.
Couple of years ago I ordered new chrome D3 boot struts from Audi, but they were superseded with normal black struts that turned up,
so I returned them for a refund as soon as I saw them. Unfortunately, I don't remember exact part number that I ordered.

The company I'm going to get to re-gas my struts makes replacement struts in either black or silver/chrome. They may be worth a look. They're called SGS Engineering.

I've had a few things from SGS over the years, including a mini compressor that I installed in my cellar for inflating tyres and blasting the dust out of computers. Great bit of kit.

My present boot struts are from SGS (standard black). Had them for a year or two. Quality seems good but they're a little over-pressured and creaky compared with the OEM struts.

The struts I tried were PN#4E0 823 359 C and they were wayyy to short. Those struts you listed look longer than the ones I tried, I might try them.

After some quick searching it looks like the ones I listed have mixed descriptions, some as boot lid dampers and others with bonnet dampers... I bet sellers do not know half the time and guess, and I might be dealing with hood struts. I can not find a part data base to confirm, but I bet that is what happened.

Thanks Gosser, let us know if you find chrome struts that actually work on D2.

Following this thread with interest.

Here are some photos for comparison.
This is the D3 4E0 823 359 C strut beside my D2 strut, about 20mm short.

With my D2 proper strut:

And with the D3 4E0 823 359 C strut:

I'll let you guys know when I acquire some of the other struts mentioned above.

Many thanks Gosser.

Try to source part numbers that I mentioned and let us all know.

I'll do some digging from my side too.
