Anyone here custom build their own turbocharger or supercharger setup on their car?

There are NOS PES G2 supercharger kits still floating about forums ebay and FB

Botang who is sometimes lurking on here has fitted a supercharger on his D2 S8 a few years ago, he brought it to the Xmas meet at the Leopard Inn one year to show us. . . the only issue seems to be overheating of the engine bay which can then affect the aluminium if it gets too bad . . . but I know that Vince one of our German owner friends has similar issues with a home made twin turbo set up. . . .

Someone put a C5 RS6 engine in an S8 some years ago, seem to remember heat was an issue then too.

The PES G4 supercharger is probably the best bet, if you can find one.
The issue with heat is because while the D2 engine bay is a little longer than the smaller models, it actually has less space around the engine than the C5 or even the B5, because the aluminium superstructure is much bulkier than the steel of the lesser models. That means less airflow around the engine, and any radiant heat source is closer to everything else. Martin had problems with everything cooking in the RS8 simply because it was all in such a tight space. It caught fire at one point because the radiant heat from the turbochargers melted one of the cylinder head seals which then dripped oil on to a very hot exhaust manifold, so he has extra heat shielding everywhere. Also the structure of the chassis legs and wing supports makes it tricky to get intercoolers in the traditional side-mount location so air-to-water cooling a supercharger like the PES setup is probably the best solution tbh as there is plenty of room in front of the radiator lower down for a charge cooler radiator. You'd be hard pushed to get a decent intercooler in there as the front grille is quite tight to the top of the radiator, although if you forfeit aircon that would make some more room. |
Interesting..wow I've would have never guessed that the engine bay space is less then the smaller Audi cars.
I did a little searching and found that the supercharger that was used for the PES kit is too small for the 4.2 engine? here is the link that I came across |
Yeah the M90 is an odd choice for the 4.2. I just found that out the other day and was surprised they didn't use the M112. I assumed that since they were just going for very light pressure boost (5psi I think) that the M90 was enough. Personally, I'd just spin the M112 slower.
I picked up an S4 TVS supercharger the other day to have a play with that on the V8 but unfortunately it is far too short. I was working on the same theory as PES used I think - the TVS can make 500hp on a 3.0, so it should make 500hp on a 4.2 right? Problem is, its so short it would need to sit on such a big spacer it would poke out of the bonnet / hood. Not a good look for a D2 :D Plus, being designed for an FSI engine, the TVS is far too wide for the port-injected engines anyway so it'll probably just be office art! The Jaguar / Range Rover M112 is probably the best one to use, sitting in the V with a chargecooler on the top. Loads of custom fab work though, and the big Eatons are expensive over here. Too expensive to buy on a whim just to see anyway. A screw charger from an AMG would be even better, but they are silly money. Maybe when all my other projects are done  |
