headlight issues
RHS halogen headlight unit 2001 4.2Q:
the unit was working fine last week but noticed on friday that the beam from the RHS unit was very very low(dipped) when compared to the LHS. i adjusted the headlight height/level switch. the LHS goes up and down fine but the RHS does not move. can any one please advise what to do next? cheers raj |
So the leveling motor isn't working then. Check the connection on the back of the headlight first I think and make sure it's in properly and there's no corrosion.
Without checking what signal is going to the motor I think the easiest way to check whether its the wiring or the motor is to probably plug the left headlight in to the right connector, which obviously would require removing it. You can just sit the headlight on top of the airbox etc and see if the beam moves. If it does then the motor in the headlight unit may have failed, or there may be internal wiring issues in the headlight. If it doesn't then it has to be a wiring fault with the car. (disclaimer - I've never tried this myself but its what I'd be looking to do if I were in the same situation) |
thanks for the reply.
thankfully headlight removal looks very straight forward. will look at connections and switch the units over to check. cheers raj |
Let me know how the investigations go, as I have a box full of headlight bits!

When I got my A8, the headlight alignment was way off, lights pointing too far down. Took headlights apart (quite easy to do as lens is clipped on) and inside at the back of the headlight reflectors themselves I found a tab that was supposed to be glued on the side, hanging off, if I remember this was the tab that attaches to the adjuster motor. I also found another broke part which I managed to glue back together, this was one of the manual adjusters. This might not be your particular problem but worth a look if your going in that far
