MMI HDD backup/replace anyone?
 

Has anyone backed up their MMI hard disk?

The 3GP type on a 2011 A8 that is.

Cloned to an IDE SSD or SD card in an IDE adapter?

I read elsewhere that when it fails you're pretty much buggered.

So i'm thinking of making a backup initially, then tying to replace.

I'm not even sure how to remove the unit, has anyone done this?

If i can clone/replace the drive i'll take some pictures and maybe put some sort of guide together.

Forgive my ignorance, is it the jukebox you are looking to back up or the whole mmi "computer" ?
I had'nt heard of any failure of either.

i have read of HDD failures on similar Audi's (and other manufacturers) elsewhere.

and that there's the nav info, voice info, and lots of other info stored on the HDD, as found on a similar unit on another website

Apparently Audi's answer is a new MMI unit, and as i've already been stung by Audi once, i was going to cover my arse so to speak.

Being an "IT man", and knowing the HDD in my 2011 unit is at least 5 years old, i'm nervous.

I have read about some people who have upgraded to SSD in the hope of performance improvements, they didn't find much of one though. If you decide to go this route make sure you find a automotive HDD - most "IT grade" PC drives are not rated for the temperature variation and vibration levels in a car.

My view is that it is something to face into *if* you have a problem, as the preemptive work carries its own risks and given the number of 5F units on ebay I can't see it is a particularly high failure rate +++
