An electrifying EV - Audi e-tron GT

Looks very nice, much nicer that a "normal" Audi e-tron, and it probably drives better than one too - but that's because it's a Porsche (Taycan) really. Unlike Audi, Porsche actually tried to design a "proper" EV first, rather than cobbling together a defensive hash of some substandard batteries + an existing ICE design. It'd actually nice enough for me to want to go and take a look.

Regrettably, it's still just another defensive stopgap to try to stop losing even more business to Tesla until VAG (and therefore Audi) can deliver a "proper" EV platform. That will eventually come in the form of their MEB architecture (quick summary here: https://www.autoevolution.com/news/h...vs-142918.html).

However, they announced that platform five years ago in 2016, and only one car - VW's iD3 - has (finally) made it into showrooms, after extensive delays. So who knows when a "normal" Audi e-tron that's really fit to compete with Tesla will finally be on sale. Audi look likely to continue borrowing Porsche's technology to try to compete with Tesla's performance levels, though this GT is still significantly slower than several Tesla MSs. Nicer looking though +++

As already said, it looks pretty.

Pretty much the same as the Porsche.

Its made the Porsche look cheap, and the Audi engineers look lazy.

That aside, I have two reasons why I wouldn't want to touch an Audi EV over my Tesla:

1) Charging infrastructure. My experience of public charging is that its a lottery, and one you can't afford to lose if you're not in a Tesla.

2) Over the air updates. Tesla do this, and do it well. Its at their core. The tech in the car matters, and they continue to support updates throughout the cars lifetime. In contrast, Audi just altered their contract with google to supply mapping, and cut off satellite maps for the vast majority of their users. (Like everyone in 2010 to 2020 cars) They will however upgrade to an alternative mapping system for those under warranty. Way to go Audi, show the world you don't care about older customers or their older cars..... so if you buy an Audi EV, do you also lose interest in those customers after 3 years ?..

I think cars, and especially EV's have crossed the threshold where they are more tech, than they are car. And that's when you need to start buying from a tech company, not a car company.

So I will continue to love the classic Audis, where they have more CC's than MHZs, but I'm just not feeling the passion for any of these EV's that are coming from the traditional manufacturers to be honest.

It is indeed a handsome car, I remember thinking that when I saw it a couple of years back at the Geneva show. However it needs a petrol V10 to make it perfect ;)
