I want an off roader
Thinking of buying a Touareg 3.6 or 4.2 petrol.
Thoughts? |

James May programme quote from an Aussie: "If you want to travel into the outback, take a Land Rover. If you want to come back again, take a Land Cruiser".
So why not a Toyota LC? Or putting it another way, do you want a proper off-roader, or an on/off roader? The Touareg would probably do both quite well, but there's others that could as well? |
I would like to stay VAG, and it will be mostly on road with flooded, off road horse box capability! The VW seem to be the cheapest out there. seen a couple of 4.2s that would take LPG easily enough.
|
I know of a V10 TDI Touareg for sale.
My old man is wanting to sell his. never properly off roaded it but driven it in the snow many times and its amazing. Been used for towing a twin axle caravan and we've forgotten its been on. Land Cruises are ok but they seem basic in comparison to a Touareg. Land Rovers just dont seem very reliable either. |
Would love a V10 but couldn't afford to run it. That's why I'm thinking petrol with LPG.
My budget is 6k. |
You can take this V10 away now and still have change.
When you say run it. Its not to bad. 30mpg ish. No belts, just fluids and filters. This one needs a bit of TLC though. |
PM inbound Scott.

thought you had a horse? how much more off road do you need than that?

Just take a look on your back lawn. That hedgehog, he's one of mine. The 3 mean looking squirrels in the tree? The one with an eye missing and a flick knife, he's one of mine. I'm watching you! |
I personally love boxy body-on-frame Mercedes G-class.
Touaregs, Q7, Cayenne, etc. are steel-space-frame chassis SUV, so not proper body-on-frame 4x4s. |
I know you said it should be VAG, but I still think the Land Cruiser Amazon V6 diesel is the best off-roader out there in terms of reliability and hardiness. Its got the amazing gear-driven engine, no chains or belts to snap.
If you can find the rare non-turbo version is even hardier, so little to go wrong. They look really good too. http://d1r57ja1amoclf.cloudfront.net...1997_HiRes.jpg My mistake, is a I6 diesel not V6. The non-turbo is the legendary 1HZ engine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_HZ_engine *edit* on the other hand the 1HZ non-turbo Amazon does sound a bit underpowered, maybe not a great reccomendation. http://4xoverland.com/turbo-charging...ta-1hz-engine/ |
I've had a 3.0d X5 since last summer and loving it.
It's not had to do any off roading so can't comment on that, but it's a brilliant package on the road. |
The X5 isn't designed for off-road really.. it's an SAV, not an SUV and BMW are keen to make that differentiation. Though, it's a great bit of kit. Not as practical as an XC90, but the XC90 isn't permanent 4WD and early models can have the splines to the rear drive fail and not be obvious until you try a situation that needs it.

+1 on a Touareg, had a lowly R5 version for 5 years. No bother other than a centre bearing carrier on the propshaft which is a common issue.
Lots of info on www.mytreg.com if you thinking of one. A Porsche Cayenne might also be an option if you are buying a petrol/lpg vehicle. They can be well specced and have small miles. |

If you're going to have a 4x4, have one, don't mess around with the pretend stuff that'll get stuck as soon as you touch one wheel on wet grass with a horse box on the back. You'll end up asking someone with a Rangie to pull you out :o
You'll only end up wanting more space anyway plus if you box clever you can have somewhere for over nighters. http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1455098230 You know it makes sense +++ |

It reminds me a bit in the way it moves of a old Fordson tractor conversion that used 2 screws 1 each side, the Russians i think developed it further into a little truck, really good in the snow. |

I love the way you've all turned Mike's search for a road going 4x4 into an army assault course vehicle!! :D

What about an L200 Mike?

Have I ever told you, you lot are rotten to me! :p

Its a shame they never put these into production. Its exactly the design philosophy I like.
One speed gearbox. Air cooled motor, battery, etc. UK built reluctance motor - these are the motors with no copper in the rotor, ultra tough no copper windings on the rotor to overheat or burn out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYbVQSYEHqg |
