On a couple of the other car forums I am on they often have a few ‘show us your’ threads for a bit of inspiration so thought I would give it a go with this.

Yes indeed. Currently 17mm on the front and 20 on the back, but I might go a bit wider for next year :) Or lower... :D

Assuming you’re current tyres are 245/45/18 you have a few options but it depends on if you mind a bit of mild stretch.

Personally I’d think about going for a 255/40/19. I,ve got 255/35/20 on 9.5’s and there is a subtle stretch.

The calculator indicates your new wheels will sit 13mm closer to the struts....probably ok but worth checking you don’t need a spacer. MJ might know if there’s tonnes of clearance on these or not.

I don't think there's a spare 13mm, but I'll check in a bit.

245/40-19 is theoretically the correct size but IIRC that size is not very common, and would probably look a bit daft on 9.5s. 255/40 is only 1.5% rolling radius larger so not a big deal, and as Ricky says will give a subtle stretch depending on what tyre brand you go for. There is a significant difference in the carcass width between brands for the same specification so for example Goodyear, Kumho and Pirelli are quite wide fitting so suit a wider wheel whereas Chinesium like Nankang and Accelera are quite narrow and so look a lot more stretched. I'll grab some pics later +++

Thanks all, I am not really looking for a ‘stretch’ look, just want them to ‘sit ‘ right so should I go for 265 or for 255. Sounds like 35 would be a good tyre profile though.

Firstly, re suspension clearance, you have plenty of room for the rim:

There's even more at the back. You'll run in to tyre clearance issues with the rear arch liner before the suspension. You definitely would have contact issues with tyres that sit square on 9.5s though so some stretch is going to be inevitable for this to work.

265 is a sort of in-between size which doesn't match the D2 properly. 35 is too small, 40 is too big. 275 35 19 is actually the correct diameter, but that would be really tight in the arches. I think its been done on the rear, but not sure about the front. Theoretically it would fit...

But, as I said it totally depends on your tyre choice. 275 Goodyears or Pirellis would be very tight, but Contis or Accelera may be just fine.

The Conti would look daft on a 9" rim, but the Vredestein would probably look much the same as the Goodyear. No pic, but I have some Nexen 255 40 19 on 8" rims and they sit the same as the Vredies do on 8.5 so they would be ridiculous on 9s.

Given that your wheels are 1" wider than stock, but 13mm closer to the suspension, that puts the tyre in exactly the same place as stock. Personally I would go for something wide in 255 40 19 - Goodyear, Vredestein, Pirelli, Kumho all sit pretty wide. You'll get a bit more stretch, but not silly.

If you're feeling brave, something narrow like Conti, Michelin, Accelera, Nexen in 275 35 19. Proportional to the 255s, 275 Contis would probably still be narrower than the Goodyears. Acceleras in that width might actually have more grip than a bicycle tyre :D I wouldn't fancy them in the rain though!

The Conti tyre on ground is insane :eek: I’d heard that they do come up narrow but 190 on 255 cross section is nuts. That’s 25% under the expected tread width.

I’m probably going to change my tyres at some point to a 245/35 as the front coilovers have settled down a bit lower now and I’m starting to hear the odd arch and tyre contact which makes my teeth go funny :(

Yeah the Contis are bizarre. For each of the tyres I measured the width of the concrete dust which is picked up when the car rolls in to the workshop. The Contis have about another 10mm of worn rubber on the inner and outer shoulder of the tyre, but it obviously only uses this cornering since there's no dust on it. The Goodyears and Vredesteins have dust right across the worn rubber area. The Contis would be more suited to an 8" rim tbh.

Me too (which is very rare for non-OEM): I like the curvaceousness of them - does the curve of the "spokes" mean that the curved part protrudes further out than the rim/tyre, or do they not curve out that much?

MJ, cast your mind back a bit. In this picture with the ruler, can you remember what size wheel/tyre combo was used?

They would be perfect for the a8, problem is the shape of the barrel center reduces til almost 17" so it does not work with the rs6 brakes:(
