RNS-D goes crazy? Says No Changer/Disk
 

The prior owner of my 2001 S8 put a "reflashed" RNS D unit in this car.
It only has the CD for the California, so here in Idaho, the nav does not work.

And I've noticed that the CD slot does not work at all. It gave me the Nav CD one time, but never again.

And the 6 Disk changer in the trunk plays fine, but does not always talk to the head unit.

At some times, it works fine, showing disk number, track number and even the time on the song.

But then without any warning, just goes crazy, and shows no disk. (Yet it keeps on playing just fine, but I have ZERO control of the CD changer, it's like it's not there anymore, but the music plays on.)

It will even change disks when the CD is over, and start a new disk, and keep on playing, but I have zero control.

Any tips? Thoughts?

The center display is wired up to work, and will show disk and track when the RNS D does, but no disk when it's not.

One more thing, the owner said he would send me a pdf on how to use this thing, but at times, it leaves me wondering who designed it?

It's not USA friendly, the radio stations are all off slightly, but again, it works when it decides to work. (or I'm sure, if I've selected the right series of buttons to select... LOL)

The radio seems to go into scan mode, and will just scan forever if you let it....

I'm about ready to get something else.

are there not two lasers? one for the nav cd in the head unit and one in the changer in the boot/trunk, I kinda suspect it might have something to do with the "reflash":Confused:

The changer in the trunk/boot works fine.

It even works fine when the head unit is saying it's dead....

The RNS e looks nice, but dang, they are not the same plugs, so I'd have to wire it up, and the one's I have seen at 1200.00 USD are way overpriced.

I can get a nice non nav eqipped Kenwood 7" dual DIN head unit that will do GPS via my smart phone, does bluetooth and has tons of other nice features.

But I lose the center gauge view I think, but I've been told that it's possible there is an adapter for the CAN system, and I might be able to wire up the S8's shifter buttons to control volume up/down, and track up/down. (That would be used WAY more than shifting that I can do via the selector if I want to drive it manually.)
