Shell launches Fill Up & Go

Hi everyone,

I've been a bit quiet as of late due to a project that's been keeping me busy at Shell that I wanted to shamelessly plug.

As of yesterday, we launched the Shell Fill Up & Go mobile payments service - powered by PayPal - here in the UK as part of the Shell Motorist app.

It allows customers to pay for fuel from the comfort of their vehicle by scanning a QR code instead of having to go inside.

The main benefits include:
- Speed as you don't have to go into the shop to pay for your fuel any more (if you want more than fuel you will have to obviously :))
- Digital receipts - no more paper and it's emailed after your transaction
- If you are a registered Shell Drivers Club member and log into the app, your points are automatically added to your account

We're the first fuels retailer to launch this and we're currently live in hundreds of sites across the country and looking to roll out to more in the coming months. To find which sites have Fill Up & Go enabled, please use the station locator function in the Shell Motorist app.

It's been a very exciting project and the reason for posting is that it would be great to get some more feedback from members that may be (or are likely) to use it. Given it's a relatively small group, it would be very helpful.

It is available to download from the Apple and Google Play app stores

Thanks in advance and hope you like it!

Oli

I've been using the App for a while whilst collecting points, so looking forward to using this. Maybe misguided, however slightly concerned about the security aspect as could a scanner operated from nearby not intercept the payment process?

Sounds great but when i tried to register and log in with paypal it fails, im sure it will be sorted at some point and will be great when it is.

Cheers for the heads up +++

Hi - as soon as I posted the thread, the PayPal registration error was discovered.

Apologies for this and the PayPal and Shell teams are working to rectify it. I will let you know once it's fixed.

Thanks,

Oli

Interesting.

So, as I understand it, you select how much fuel you want (£20 - £150 according to the Shell website) and the pump automatically cuts off when you reach the chosen amount ...

Can you also pay for just the amount of fuel taken, by putting the pump nozzle back, in case the tank is full before you reach the chosen amount?

Delboy 24th July 2015 01:02 PM

If you authorise 150 but only take 5.23 you only pay 5.23

But we still have to leave the comfort of our car to fill it up?
I suppose its progress of sorts...... How about having a person near the pumps who actually fills it up for you, offers to check your oil and gives your windscreen a smeary wipe? Now THAT would be progress. We could call them pump attendants!

and another thing I have only just "upgraded" to an iphone 4 and that seems totally unsupported as all these apps seem to be for IOS 6 and above.

I had a full on toot at some poor cashier the other day as the card only pump wouldnt unlock until, as stated clearly, I "swiped" my Tesco card. I got her out of the comfort of her booth to do it and she said you hold it steady in front of the scanner - not move it. I said it clearly states you SWIPE it and that they should provide less ambiguous intructions. Exit one grumpy cashier stage left. I however, felt much better. Mrs D was cringing in the car.

Rant over. Off to get my coat now.

mannyo 24th July 2015 02:52 PM

it'll be kind of like Tesco or Asda pay at pump I guess except we use an app on our phone to pay instead of the Debit card straight into the pump.

Oli, is there a maximum spend like Tesco and Asda which have a max of £99 on pay at pump.

Turbo Tony 24th July 2015 03:24 PM

I saw this at my local Shell and I'm looking forward to it.

I didn't realise it automatically assigns points to your account, which has always stopped me using pay at pump before, although there was a brief period where the pay at pump machines accepted a pluspoints card.

David, funny you mention that - my local Shell has an attended pump service where there is someone who will gas up your tank for you.

£150, I think:

  • From inside your car, open the Shell Motorist app and tap “Fill Up & Go”
  • Once the service starts, choose how much you want to spend – from £20 to £150.
  • Stay in your car and scan the QR code displayed at the pump.
  • The app will activate the pump and you’re ready to refill.

Hi,

Apologies for the outage today - PayPal unfortunately had a global registration issue on a specific API which has affected all companies that use it. The fix has been identified and is rolling out as we speak so many should be able to use it now but some may still have to wait a few hrs as the solution is updated.

Hi Cornership - we've had to do an enormous amount of testing of not just our own systems but also PayPal's who are the actual payment provider. I'll try and see if i can get a more official answer to your question after the weekend but it's PayPal and they are the leaders in online payments and security.

Hi Manny - yes but the app should be quicker. That and you get your loyalty points added automatically and no more paper receipts. It also stores all your previous transactions.

Thansk Delboy - you're absolutely right!

That's right, we have what we call 'attended service' is select stations and at specific times. It's not a service we offer everywhere and during the whole day but it's in place in specific locations. To find out where it's available, please check out the Shell Station Locator, click on the filter 'services and amenities' and select 'attended service'.

That's correct. However, in the first few days, the maximum is still £100 for testing purposes. The £150 option will be available in the coming week approximately.

Ah pump attendants whatever happened to those.
I suppose health and safety would not allow you to do it nowadays as there is a risk of being run over, punched in the face and run over, burned and run over or just plane and simple inhalation of fumes.

And what if you don't have a Tesco card?.

I reckon if Shell were to stop all the leaks in their pipework their fuel could be a lot cheaper.

Also think that if you spill it you clear it up rather than just argue for years over how much to pay locals for ruining their lives and the world they live in. That's not just shell that's all oil companies.

Delboy 29th July 2015 10:44 AM

Well a wee update from me, I managed to link my PayPal to my app then went to install the same app on the wife's phone so when she fills up its all together.

Fail, same error as first time round wtf??

Tried loads of times then it decided to say my pass word was wrong, had I forgot it in the space of a day mmm not likely. Tried a reset anyway, received an email from shell about login with temp password instructions and go to places within the app to change password that don't even exist.

Whoever built this app needs firing, I can find my way through most IT issues but this one is like a Jedi level Mensa test.

Not impressed Oli, I know it's not your fault but perhaps you know who's arse needs kicking.

Dezzy 29th July 2015 10:50 AM

Maybe a ex fisherman in Bodo has plenty of time on his hands could have a look at it :p

Well I've got no chance then, I can't even embed photos in my posts so this will be way beyond my capabilities :o

I'll wait until the glitches are sorted before attempting it, and will watch for further updates on this thread in the meantime +++

Reffro 29th July 2015 02:21 PM

Hi Oli,
I just wanted to say that having received the e-mail from Shell advertising the launch of Fill & Go, I had to decline due to one specific reason.

I have a cashback credit card that gives me 3% discount on fuel purchases. I'll lose that if I am paying for my fuel through Paypal instead. Had I been able to assign a credit card to an account and maintained the cash back, I dare say I'd be using Fill & Go already.

No doubt there will be reasons for linking payment to Paypal, security being chief among them. Take heart that I'll still be an enthusiastic user of VPower fuels and will continue to collect points on behalf of Macmillan nurses, something which I would encourage all Shell customers to do.

The_Laird 29th July 2015 02:31 PM

I have the same card, so won't be using this service either.

They spent something like 7 years arguing over how much to pay out to the locals for compensation. I feel that the oil companies should clean up their mess rather than just paying each person 2 grand or whatever it works out and walk away leaving the mess behind.

Glad you cleared that up. I too was wondering how a Norwegian Fishermen in his chunky jumper was involved.

Delboy 29th July 2015 05:22 PM

Well that kind of **** goes on everywhere there is corruption.

I have seen with my own eyes raw crude being pumped out of a open ended pipe into ponds dug into the ground in Baku, gas being burned of in quantities that you would not believe because its not profitable to either re-inject it into the well or transport ashore and sell.

The list goes on and on, but its not only oil companies, even the likes of Coca cola are at it.

If you want to get properly wound up at the injustice in the world have a watch of this

I noticed today at my local Shell garage in Swindon that the Fill and Go QR scan codes are currently covered so I'm assuming there are still issues. The guy in the station said the owner had seen some issues with trying to test it himself so I'm not sure when this will be resolved

moltuae 4th August 2015 09:07 PM

Definitely some issues I'd say.

I tried to use it 3 different times at 3 different filling stations over the weekend. Each time, I scanned the code then it went to 'authorising'. There were queues waiting for the pumps so after a minute or two of waiting for it to authorise, I decided it'd be quicker to give up and just pay at the kiosk.

I've pretty much given up on it now. Seems like a good idea badly implemented. :(

tintin 6th August 2015 03:23 PM

An alternative to traditional fill up and go...

https://twitter.com/TeslaMotors/stat...05813912326146

though not in production yet, just a prototype…and doesn't need payment details, since the fuel is free, of course ;)

Turbo Tony 8th August 2015 10:58 AM

Didn't have much luck with it myself :(

Scanned the code three times and it said there was a problem with Paypal. I check my Paypal account, which was fine and even held my Shell points card.

The fourth and fifth time, a different message came up which said there was a technical fault.

To top it all off, once I finally gave up on the idea and decided to pay inside, it took forever for the pump to start.

Goshdarnit.

moltuae 8th August 2015 11:45 AM

Did anyone else recieve a free £5 b̶r̶i̶b̶e̶ compensation from Shell, or was that just me?

Cool yet kinda weird. It moves and looks like it came straight out of some 70s Sci-Fi horror movie, "Return of the Killer Robot Colons from Outer Space".

Hi all,

Apologies for the radio silence the last 2 weeks. Have unfortunately had to deal with a few personal things including my 8 being vandalised on all panels apart from the roof and bumpers. The car is in the body shop now being repaired but i'll update on a seperate thread.

Reading the updates on this post, I was really disapointed to hear about the issues people are having. I am in direct contact with the UK team and will share the feedback left here by others.

I will come back to this thread later this week but thanks for the honest feedback which will be used to help improve the service.

Oli

Architex_mA8tey 9th August 2015 04:47 PM

Wow sorry to hear about your 8 Oli it really angers me when people needlessly vandalise people's pride and joy - hope you get it sorted soon but let me know if you need help with anything :(

Ah, yes. Looking at the email again, it does look like it was from PayPal.

Turbo Tony 11th August 2015 10:39 PM

Holy cow Oli, I just spotted your post. I'm really sorry to hear about your car and hope the repair is done to your satisfaction.

notorious 26th November 2015 09:50 PM

I tried fill up and go today and found it confusing.

Normally I fill up the car first and only after that I go to the till and pay. With shell fill up and go I need to initiate the transaction through my phone *before* actually filling up the the car! I find it ridiculous. Who designed this?

Digitising fuel payment episode is a great great idea, but cusomter experience shouldn't be compromised.

How it should work: I fill up the car first and only after that I take the phone out of my pocket and transact. This is the only right sequence of events. How shell could miss this key concept?

Oh maybe I'm an idiot... Explain me :)

Delboy 26th November 2015 10:21 PM

My understanding of it is you authorise payments before filling up from the safety of inside the car.

Then you get out leaving said phone in your pocket or car and fill up and go.

Not fill up then faff around with the phone in a cloud of explosive vapour trying to pay for the fuel in the cold and wind.

To me the process makes sense, shame I'm still waiting to find a bloody station that does it.

notorious 26th November 2015 10:49 PM

After I filled up the car I'm happy to sit in it and pay sitting in the A8 interior.
In full safety, avoiding winds, cold climates and having to go to the till.
The key word is after :)
+++

Delboy 26th November 2015 11:57 PM

But if it didn't work after you filled up without alternative means of payment that would be a bit of bother.

Just wish they would hurry up and roll it out across the stations

The_Laird 27th November 2015 06:02 AM

It's been in my local Shell almost from the start, but it worked for a week or two and hasn't worked since! There's just a hand-written sign to say there are 'technical difficulties'.

But I wouldn't use it anyway because my bank gives me 'cash back' on petrol purchases on my credit card.
