My A8 / S8 Project Mega spec D2

The regulars will be familiar with it: Probably one of the most documented cars ever to feature on here, with 3 forum owners (and me having it twice) on this forum, it has a staggering amount of documentation stretching right back to day 1 where it enjoyed a full audi service history from the same supplying dealer up until 121K miles in 2006.

At 143K miles, the engine failed, and when A8parts didn't have a spare 4.2 A8 engine in stock, but did have fresh in, an S8 with engine, gearbox, rear diff, ECU's and cluster, a plan was born.

The car had previously been LPG converted, and the conversion was moved across to the new engine and retained.

I bought the car from these guys very shortly afterwards on 30/09/2009 and then proceeded to invest a lot of time and effort into upgrading the interior as well documented here:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1392

I sold it to a forum member in July 2010 where much further love was poured into the bodywork, and it gained S8 door mirrors and grills along with D3 20" wheels.

see here:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1992

and more photos here:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2482

It then changed hands again in summer 2011, to a non forum member....

Then, in Feb 2012 it came back to the forum, but not in a good state:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3944

Here, it gained an S8 exhaust, heated windscreen, S8 suspension, S8 brakes and a 2nd drop down monitor screen in the rear.

and finally, back to me again in November 2015:

I've done a lot of work to it, but have had a big change of circumstances and just won't have time for project cars going forward, so, along with most of my other cars, its up for sale. Here first to forum members, as I would like it live on and be great again. That said, it will go on ebay if there is no serious interest.

Summary:

1st Reg: 17th Jan 2000
Colour: Ming Blue
Model: A8 4.2 Quattro Sport
Mileage: Body: 190725, Engine and gearbox: 143744, Clocks: 195792

S8 conversion including:
Engine
Gearbox
Rear diff
ECU
TCU
Instrument cluster
Front grills
Door mirrors
Steering wheel
Brakes
Suspension
Exhaust

Audi OEM options:
Individial electric rear seats (believed to be only sports set in the UK)
Seats auto retract on door open
Front passenger seat adjust from rear
Heated windscreen
Heat and UV reflective glass
Solar sunroof
Heated front and rear seats
Blinds
Alcantara Headling
Enhanced leather pack
Xenon plus
Cruise
Auto dim mirrors
Bose
CD Changer
Passenger seat memory

Other kit:
LPG converted
USB charging point inside armrest
RNS-E
Full OEM Digital TV
OEM Bluetooth handsfree

Good points:
9J D3 9 spoke alloys, straight and true albeit painted wrong colour
9 spoke spare, but its an 8.5J as don't think 9 will fit in the wheel well
4 good recent tyres
All service items have been recently done, including cambelt, oil, filters etc.
New injectors, new MAF, new spark plugs, new cam lifter
Gearbox is good, recon at ~100K and was serviced at Mackies a couple of years back (little mileage since)
All body trims, grills, etc are present
PDC / Air Con / sunroof etc all work fine
Cheap tax
MOT to march 2018

Bad points:
Engine idles roughly. Seems to vary with ambient temperature. Smoother when cold. Drives fine. Pulls fine. Good MPG. Got better, rather than worse since I've had it.
Bodywork needs serious TLC. Front bumper worst. Scratches on 2 doors, boot lid. Rear bumper bad too.
Rear aerial missing
Exhaust blows (sounds great actually, but probably should be fixed)
N/s autodimming glass is glazed over
Corrosion on fuel flap and bottom of n/s front door
Front (o/s I think) wheel bearing is moaning a little
Needs a drivers side platinum floor mat (current one is swing, dark grey)
Mismatch of keys/locks around the car
Airbag light is on
Rear door cards need securing

But, it drives. Its never let me down. Its a 'work in progress' that you can drive every day, and at < 60p / litre to boot +++ There is not, and probably will not be, another D2 with this spec - however it is 17 years old, and shows in places.

I'd like to see £3500 for it, to reduce the eye watering amount I've spent on it - but - convince me you're going to treat it well, rather than strip it for parts (which would be quite lucrative - The RNS kit with Digital TV and Bluetooth is best part of a grand) and I'm open to serious offers..... Its a private sale, that I make no warranties on - but, I will answer any questions I can going forward in the pursuit of assisting the new owner improve it....

Wow, this is truly an amazing car with mind blowing spec and with a bit of TLC could be the best overall D2 in the country.

''to reduce the eye watering amount I've spent on it - but - convince me you're going to treat it well, rather than strip it for parts''

Sounds like an interview process inc. background checks when I was selling my A8 :D

Good Luck with the sale Ian +++

Lol. I am a realist. There aren't that many people with the time and skills to sort this car fully, but yes, once done it would be one hell of a beast, and I'd be keen to sell to them first.

But, I expect more interest from folks who might want to enhance their car by robbing the juicy parts off this, and if done right, you still have an LPG converted D2 to sell at the end of it......... so in that case don't expect it cheap ;)

Seriously? My 3.7 cost me £2350 four years ago and the only option it had was a heated windscreen.

Someone on here please buy it and finish the restoration, rather than have it go to someone who would probably just butcher it.

If I had the money, I'd buy it, but I'd never pass the interview process +++

If I had room in the garage I think this would be heading my way - but I don't so it won't :)

Almost tempted - If I was going to have another eos though, it'd have to be the V6 - sounds fab with roof down !

Well, I confess I'd hoped it would fetch more than that, but seems to have gone to a good home...... sigh.

He arrived to collect with some exceptional speed, which was understandable.....

Couldn't resist telling him if he ever wanted rid I'd consider having it back.
