Quicky D2S or D2R

2002 FL

8EC = Bi-functional headlight with gas discharge lamp, for driving on the left

Net says D2S, but the bulb in there is D2R.

Now I know they are slightly different mounting so a D2R will go in but may be in the wrong orientation for reflectors etc...

The right answer would be appreciated!

Xenon plus is D2R, standard Xenon (with projector lens) is D2S IIRC.

Can I assume then that the 8EC light code is good old standard cooking Xenon and not the plus?

D2R bulbs were originally designed for Mercedes-Benz. Consequently, D2R bulbs and D2S bulbs (used initially by BMW) feature subtle differences at the base of the bulb for fitment purposes. The differences primarily consist of a cut-out and notch for fastening purposes being located differently. In addition to the base varying slightly, D2R bulbs are easily distinguished by ceramic paint along the sides of the capsule, which reduces glare to oncoming traffic as these are placed in reflector type headlights.

D2S are intended for projector type headlights (Those with a lens) which is what our Audis with normal xenons have so you should be using D2S's on dipped beam.

I think that on the full beam of the xenon plus it will be a reflected fitment D2R bulb as it has a reflector behind it and a mask that drops down and up to flash and do full beam. Not sure about the dipped beam on a xenon plus.

Now with D2S bulbs I do not want to touch Chinese so that really leaves Osram or Philips.

Philips cooking model or is the Xtreme Vision versions worth the extra fun tokens?

If they are bi-xenons like these:

They should use a D2R like this:

The black bit round the bulb also runs along the base of the filament which you can just see in the pic below:

There are MANY poor quality fakes about so I'd be prepared to spend a little more in the hope of getting a genuine one.

I'd have a look at these and the info linked within his advert, plus feedback to decide if they are genuine. I bookmarked the seller years ago and he's been selling these consistently ever since

Ah yes, thank you for that your headlights look identical to mine so I shall procure some D2Rs!

Never realised I had the better spec lights but it seems my car was built in the last month ever for the D2 so has lots of extras.
