D4 dead flat battery - help please

Our car must have gone off me. After the recent handbrake failure it now has a stone cold dead battery. Had been fine until Saturday when it would not even unlock. Used the key to get in but found the car to be completely dead.

Is this normal for a battery to fail with no warning? The car has stop-start so I am wondering if it is a safety feature for the car to 'switch off' if the battery is too weak, but without warning is what I don't understand.

I will have the battery on a charger for all of today and see how it responds but it looks like I need a new battery at close to £200 :( Is it a simple changeover or is there a specific procedure for such a complex car?

Cheers all, Simon

Hi mate.

I've never had a battery die like that, but I've heard that is how they tend to go. Years of faithful service with gradual degradation and then boom. Gone. It's why I've tended to replace mine preventatively. With the AGM batteries of whatever they tend to be pricier. Have you looked at ECP, and tried some discount codes?

Can't speak of the D4, but on the D3 you have to code the battery in (or is at least strongly recommended) using VCDS. It's because these cars have battery regulation module doo-dahs (I believe is the correct term) which need to be told the new battery has been fitted. You'd think being so clever it would 'know'.

Hope you get it sorted pronto

mondie 26th September 2016 11:16 AM

Hi John,

Who is ECP? I have asked the club shop for a price on a battery and have found a few options online, will wait and see what the shop comes back with first.

I measured the voltage across the battery, 2.5v  Guess it must have suffered multiple cell failure. Getting access to the battery is going to be fun, I would be lying if I said I knew where it is even located !!

Car is due a service shortly so I guess I can replace the battery and have the coded then.

Euro Car Parts - http://www.eurocarparts.com/

If you also go to https://www.myvouchercodes.co.uk/ and type in 'Euro Car Parts', it'll display a list of discount coupons, some up to 55% discount.

Johnmed 26th September 2016 12:42 PM

^What they said. Sorry. SALE30 gets you 30% discount today, don't know if they'll be cheaper than you've already found.

mondie 26th September 2016 02:09 PM

Thanks guys, very helpful :)

Found the battery - it's in the boot which I am sure most of you already knew. Looks easy enough to change out. Car is fitted with a Varta battery so probably original to the car making it about 5.5 yrs old. The battery has no real detail on its CCA rating so I will have to trust what EPC recommends I guess.

Cheers

Be careful. My D4 had a dead battery in December after an extended stay in the garage, Audi assist diagnosed it was dead (~2v) and jumped it to get me home.

The next day the supplying dealer agreed to replace, but as they were a distance away and it was the week before Christmas agreed to pay a more local dealer to do the work. They were useless and never got in touch, and so with the agreement of the original dealer I bought a battery form Halfords and fitted it myself.

All was well, the car starts again. But for some time after I have had a number of electrical gremlins, after much trouble shooting including factory support the current thinking is that the battery needed coding and they couldn't do so with non-OEM, they replaced the battery again and now are going to replace the BCM (batter control module) as they suspect that is at fault (possibly from the jump start by Audi assist!?).

For reference, the dealer quote for a replacement battery fitted and coded was £300 - so twice the supply only cost of the battery, but possibly a small price to pay for piece of mind!?

Edited to say - not much info on coding a D4 battery I could find last year, suspect it is similar to the D3 but not the same!

mondie 26th September 2016 04:41 PM

Thanks for the advice Paul, especially the bit about not being able to code to new the battery and needing to buy another. How ridiculous is that! I am glad that I havent jumped the car, its stuck on my drive so there's not much Audi can do for me at this point either.

Prices for a replacement battery vary wildly, this seems to be the best deal but I have never heard of Enduroline. No doubt a rebrand as this is rife in the battery market like many others.

https://www.tayna.co.uk/019-Enduroli...CCA-P8385.html

Staying with OEM this is the best I can find

https://www.tayna.co.uk/Type-019-Var...ery-P3127.html

This is all a bit messy. ECP has 3 or 4 batteries but they are more than double the price and same spec/warranty, I cannot work out the difference.

paulrstaylor 26th September 2016 05:13 PM

No problem - notionally this was the right size for mine, I will have a spare when I get the car back as without the coding my car had issues!!!!!

I suspect coding would have been possible using VCDS, but as it was warranty work I have left them to fit a genuine Audi part +++

mondie 26th September 2016 05:44 PM

can anyone decipher the difference between these two Varta's, one claims to be for stop-start but the spec of it is lower. Is this just marketing as I cannot see how there is any real difference.

https://www.tayna.co.uk/Type-019-Var...ery-P3127.html

https://www.tayna.co.uk/G14-Varta-St...085-P8424.html

The cheaper battery has better specs.

why would I pay £220 for this (less 30%)

:Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused:

paulrstaylor 26th September 2016 06:47 PM

The more expensive one is an AGM battery, which is used on stop-start cars. If your current one isn't AGM, I'd stick with the standard type +++

mondie 26th September 2016 07:10 PM

The car has start-stop (it's always off though) and I guess has an AGM, all 3 I posted above are AGM although the Varta Silver Dynamic does not promote it. Hence why I am confused, is this all just marketing BS or am I missing something obvious. All of the batterys I have found are slightly smaller in width than the factory battery too.

mondie 26th September 2016 10:43 PM

God this is a ball ache.

From tonight's reading, I have found that to code the new battery to the car you need a battery with a BEM code. Guess who sells them, yep Audi and no one else  So screw that.

This is what I will buy tomorrow once I have verified the dims one last time, its the closest I can find to what's in the car.

https://www.tayna.co.uk/610-200-Vart...92--P3200.html

Apparently if you don't recode the car after a new battery 2 things can happen.

1) Possibly shorter battery life but this is probably just a scare from Audi.

2) The cars electrics may not function correctly until the car has learnt that the battery is strong. As mine died overnight I assume the ECU has a stored a depleted battery status and the only way for the car to learn it has a new battery is by using the car, starting it over and over etc so it learns and begins to reactivate systems that are shut down to preserve battery power.

Wonder if that's why you experienced issues with your new battery Peter?

Cheers

briang9 26th September 2016 10:52 PM

Not sure if your car is the same, but I recently replaced the battery on my RS6 with a non OEM battery, a YUASA one actually. When recoding in the new battery my mechanic was able to use the details of the old OEM battery which it happily accepted, seems as long as it knows it has a new battery it's happy, hope yours is as easy+++

mondie 26th September 2016 11:21 PM

Brian, yes I read that any details will do provided you can get the car to accept them. Seems like its a load of tosh, resetting the ECU/BCM so it knows it has a new battery is what matters I gather. I guess I will see how I get on without this in a couple of days.

Exactly that, and that was six months after changing the battery! Net result was things just acted weirdly and the car went into "hibernate" mode far too often. New BCM and new battery and they are hopeful it will be resolved.

Have a read of http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...ry_Replacement, the "trick" on the D3 was to use the old battery data but to change the last number of the serial number for the BCM thinks it is actually a "genuine" new battery, not sure if that will work with the D4 though!?

In any case, good luck +++

mondie 27th September 2016 08:41 AM

six months and still a problem! Hopefully the BCM was the cause of this but what are we coming to when you cannot safely jump a car and need to spend hours learning how to change a battery. Its madness.

If I can get the car going then I will be happy as I can have the car reprogrammed by an Audi specialist next month.

Cheers

mondie 28th September 2016 09:32 PM

The new battery arrived today from Tanya, £99 delivered. This one:

https://www.tayna.co.uk/610-200-Vart...92--P3200.html

Fitted it up no problem, case was identical size/shape to the OEM and ratings all within a few percent too. Car started and runs normally, all electrics work normally too, its as though nothing ever happened. So far so good :D

Thanks for all the advice on this thread.

funkmiester 24th November 2019 10:01 PM

Flat battery- car stuck in shut down cycle.

What the hell am i doing on a 3 year old thread? Well it's the same car, I bought from Mondie, last May and it has been brilliant other than getting the rear diff done and some new front discs/pads.

Issue battery is emptying itself in about 5 hours. That's a hell of rate.

Started last week, dead overnight, thought it was unusual but hey, it's winter and was below zero last week.
Charged it back to health off the car. Drained again overnight.
The battery was the one Mondie installed at the end of this thread the silver varta. I was stuck and figured 3 years is a bit short of life so I went round to Halfrauds and bought a 019 AGM 95AH (Halfrauds brand Yausa) for the Ouch of £184 but it has a 5 year guarantee so we'll see.
Knowing what fun coding can be so I bought to a OBDeleven Pro for £99 and have been impressed so far.

What is currently happening with the car is:
Power Off take key out (press the internal alarm off so i can sit in the car and watch)
Powers down as normal then:
Various relays click inside and out (don't know where, traffic noise ouside car)
Parking light red (P) on dash lights with the P on the gear selector and the red parking brake light.
20-30 seconds later
Parking light and gearbox goes out
A pump runs under the bonnet for 20 seconds(don't know what but suspect this is what the big battery drain is)
Then the parking brake light goes out and then 20 seconds later the whole cycle starts again.

Car runs/drives fine, just won't go to sleep.

I did several full dumps with OBD Eleven. I even swapped out the 3 door handle sensors just in case it was that (Mondie had provided replacements but I had never been bothered before, done now, no difference)
Main errors from the dump below:
1) There is also no communication with the Battery control module, either it failed before? or I broke it swapping out the battery (possible but unlikely). I've ordered a new one just in case. And yes the yellow/purplish cable is correctly installed on the negative terminal/BECM

No 19 Gateway has 3
U105000 - Battery monitoring control module No Communication
U104900 - Optical data bus Open circuit
U011200 - Lost Communication With Battery Energy Control Module "B"
static

So I await the new BECM but it might not be that. I know Mondie had the parking brake switch replaced (I have the old one as well) and the fact this weird cycle starts and ends with the parking brake suggests it might be a faulty switch (again). And what is with the optical data bus open circuit?

I'll try disconnecting the parking brake switch tomorrow and see if the cycle continues but I suspect that will just throw up different errors.

Many thanks for reading so far, thoughts welcome.

I'll try disconnecting the parking brake switch tomorrow and see if the cycle continues but I suspect that will just throw up different errors.

Not familiar with the D4 so just guesswork. Before you disconnect the parking brake switch, could you watch it again but with the parking brake not set (assuming the car is parked on a level surface) to see if the behaviour changes. If it does, then the switch would be the culprit.

Architex_mA8tey 25th November 2019 06:10 AM

I had an issue with a D4 where we though it was the parking brake switch and indeed replaced it, and a couple of months later the same issue occured of the electronic parking brake not releasing. Fortunately I had Vagcom with me and was able to tell the handbrake to release itself!
On further investigation it turned out to be loose wiring / connections where the wiring harness went into the brake module in the LH side behind the boot trim. This was sorted out and all has been fine since - worth a check in case you are getting intermittent connections causing issues +++

funkmiester 25th November 2019 01:30 PM

Many thanks will try both. The BECM is in the post so we will see.

funkmiester 28th November 2019 06:09 PM

Update:

Brand new earth cable with the BECM arrived today and fitted. It was a brand new cable (no kinks) but the female socket for the BECM was smashed off leaving the two pins exposed which is the same as the one I took off. I have a third one on it's way on a slow boat from Lithuania which I ordered first.....
Anyway, no joy, still can't connect to the BECM. Looking at various various diagrams it appears just to be diode?

I tried leaving the handbrake off and the car still cycles itself back on (like the list above just without the Parking brake symbol this time. The P on the gearbox lights and the pump under the bonnet runs- rinse repeat.

I checked the cables that I could find in the boot all seem tight.

Scanned, all codes gone except the BECM no contact.

So Questions:
Does anyone understand the logic of which components can "wake" the car up? At this stage it doesn't appear to be the handbrake.

This is the only code that might meant something from the first scan but it has not re-appeared
02067 - Optical data bus unauthorized awakening request Intermittent
But I can't find anything constructive on the net about it and it's currently not a live code. Car still runs perfectly, just doesn't go to sleep.

funkmiester 7th December 2019 05:58 PM

Update:
took car to well regarded local diagnostics place. Hmmm, jury is still out on them and the fault. They have traced it to a zero voltage at the drivers side door control module and had the door apart. This would make sense in terms of waking the car up. Note it is not the door handle sensors, it's apparently the door module. They have had it 4 days so far, hurry doesn't seem to be in their vocab. They haven't seen or heard anything like this before. I'll let you know how I get on...

funkmiester 23rd February 2020 04:36 PM

The door module was a red herring. It was not working but not the cause of the car's insomnia/batter drain. The car returned just after new year, not fixed but problem identified as the diagnostic module 4Ho907468F. I have been running the car with this module disabled by pulling the fuse and the car has been fine. I have located a second hand one and it will be fitted when I get the chance. All that work and it turns out to be the diagnostic module not allowing the car to sleep. Time will tell whether the replacement is a full fix. Thought I'd keep this updated as there is nothing anywhere on the internet about a faulty diagnostic module or this type of battery drain.

Thanks that's very useful to know - not heard about that particular issue anywhere yet but a lot of this type of issue will no doubt come out of the woodwork over coming years!
