Take the bad with the good

So after 12 months of looking tomorrow I have a B7 RS4 Cabriolet being delivered +++

Low mileage, good condition and a reasonable price - negligible difference in insurance from by S4 cab and I love the colour.

Trade value on the S4 was negligible due to mileage, lots of motorway use in early life, so today I had an MOT booked to put a fresh ticket on it and list it for sale on ebay as it stands. There are a couple of minor niggles that need fixing, but figured an easy life was worth the hit in price I'd take (2nd baby due next week). Drove fine this morning, but got to time for the MOT and it just kept cranking with no start  No time to diagnose, didn't want to loose the pre-booked MOT fee, so jumped in the A8 which was due a test in a couple of weeks and took it to the MOT station as it stood totally unprepared.... passed without issue +++

Read the codes on the S4, it needs a crank position sensor - not the end of the world, but a PITA timing wise - did I mention heavily pregnant other half

So now my dilemma, sell the S4 as it stands "spares or repair", "buyer collects" - or take the skin off my arms fitting a CPS, put a MOT on it and list it then? Other outstanding niggles, it needs a roof motor (£95 fitted - in harrogate!?) and the AC need re-gassing. Tempted to cut my losses

IT 19th June 2018 08:16 PM

Depends how bothered you are about spending time fixing it....

2nd baby time is not ideal for car fixing and selling.

This all assumes that after doing the CPS, it then flies through the MOT.

If you enjoy the tinkering, and want/need the extra dosh, sort it.

Otherwise let it go as is. It'll fetch a fairly low price I guess, but its out of your hands... Any car that has a short MOT, or won't drive is going to take a hammering pricewise, and at present it has both ?

paulrstaylor 19th June 2018 08:20 PM

It's a balance, nappies are not cheap after all

Will pass it's MOT if it starts, sensor is less than £40 new, or less than £20 used (A8 parts), if I can get to it then game on! Otherwise no MOT and not running :(

Still, I suspect someone will see a quick buck in it so maybe easier to shift in this state! That was certainly my thought with the roof motor +++

tonupkid 19th June 2018 09:02 PM

Selling it as an MOT'd runner will surely exceed the cost of letting a mechanic do what needs to be done.
All the best with the new arrival..... and the baby :D

RS6 19th June 2018 09:28 PM

really like it! after one of these myself rs4! +++

briang9 19th June 2018 09:34 PM

I would replace the sensor and get it MOTd, means you will get a lot more for it, you will have plenty time to do it in the middle of the night when your other half is feeding the baby..;)

Lovely RS4 BTW+++

Simonbartlett 20th June 2018 04:17 PM

Im looking for a cab for my wife. Could you send a few pics and details and how much you want for it as it stands ?

1781cc 21st June 2018 10:55 AM

whats the condition of the chains, clutch, aux rads on the S4?

I'm with these guys on this., get it MOT'ed: no MOT will massively reduce your (already small...) market for this car, and people won't even read beyond the "No MOT" headline.

No rattle, no slip, no leaks +++

I agree, but that may mean it sits for a long time waiting

I'll order the sensor, if I can get to it and find a spare hour or two then awesome +++ but to be honest, little chance of that over the next month or so :-(

homer simpson 21st June 2018 09:16 PM

Definitely fit the sensor. When I see a car that states it only needs a sensor it makes me wonder why it wasn't done? Hiding something else?

So today the sun is shining, a replacement sensor is due to be delivered and so I decided to check the ctek battery charger was doing its job.

Turned the key, fired up fine

So now I can say that the CPS is intermittent, not dead!

Plan to book an MOT, I may or may not get the sensor fitted given timings (now at 39 weeks for baby)!

Yesterday a scrap man drove past, I was half tempted to flag him down :-( The truth of the matter is, while I need the drive space I obviously have an emotional attachment to this car and would like it to live on! This isn't a "for sale" thread, a couple of people have expressed and interest, so I am hopeful that is possible +++

Gosh! Red leather. Now I'm interested ;)

Red Leather? Yellow Leather? Red Leather? Yellow Leather? I remember that...:p

paulrstaylor 28th June 2018 08:22 PM

Well today was another mixed day, missed the MOT slot due to "I might be having contractions", needless to say false alarm. Couldn't get it re-booked today, maybe tomorrow!

On the plus side, the replacement CPS arrived in the post, so I got on and fitted it. Took less than an hour, only lost a bit of skin up to my elbow

At least I know it is done now - MOT next +++

IT 28th June 2018 09:12 PM

I'm desperately resisting showing any interest in this car. I have a soft spot for the S4 cab as I'm sure you recall.....

I'm hoping it sails through the MOT, pushing its worth up considerably, and thus ending my interest in it ;)

paulrstaylor 28th June 2018 09:44 PM

The guy who fixes the roof motor is based in Harrogate, must be fate!?

paulrstaylor 30th June 2018 06:03 PM

Well I got a last minute appointment this afternoon - now have a 12 month MOT+++

As Monday is baby day, I will be putting the car on hold for a while. I will put up a for sale ad on here shortly!

1781cc 1st July 2018 08:43 PM

Nice work on the MOT, hope its all good on the birthing front!

Johnmed 2nd July 2018 08:57 AM

Nice work Paul. All the best for the birth. I’m sure I read somewhere only 1% of births are on their estimated due date. Not sure how C sections factor in!!

paulrstaylor 2nd July 2018 08:17 PM

11am this morning, a boy - all very relaxed and everyone is doing well +++

Johnmed 2nd July 2018 08:25 PM

Excellent news Paul. All the best.
