Windscreen Renewal

I decided to have my windscreen replaced last week as there were a couple of chips directly in my field of vision while driving, which annoyed me.

I rang my insurance company on Tuesday, arranged an appointment for Friday afternoon, job done in an hour.

I'm easily pleased :)

Good to hear. Mine needs doing at some point as it has some tiny chips/scratches/wear and it's annoying in bright sunlight. I would however like to get a heated screen fitted but have to look into fitting the wiring first, plus other components.

I remember the solar roof and HFS were a combined option, they were only a couple of hundred extra I think compared to a standard sunroof. If only the original owner had specced it!

I know that feeling

How much was the excess? I think insurance premium goes up renewal time. Do they provide original spec or aftermarket?+++

I would also like to upgrade to a heated screen, the most difficult part looks like running a pulled-up voltage +ve wire from a control module under the battery to the screen. Not sure if it is special wire as I expect it is going to be ~200V. I assume it is DC and not AC.

I also wonder how the screen connects - I have never seen any photos of the connector on the screen or on the car.

It does differ a bit for different insurance companies generally £60-100, I think most are £75, check your policy T&Cs

You do not loose NCD even if it is not protected, I suspect it does affect price as you still need to declare it for 5 years as a claim but for me at least it was not noticeable, the total price was still going down after it as I was getting another year older and a year more of NCD.

I suspect they will try to go for cheaper option where possible. To me they said they will only pay for OEM for cars up to 3 years old but at the end after long discussions they gave in and agreed to let me have OEM for A6 which was about 12-13 years old at the time but I had to pay excess of £100 instead of £75 and had to pay for it myself first and then claim it back from them.

Funny enough I was googling this yesterday and was looking for the exact same thing! Couldn't find anything

Cheers. My excess is £90 with Admiral

It's not OEM due to the age of the car, but I knew that, I'm just glad to have an unmarked screen. The one just removed wasn't the original so that probably wasn't OEM either. It was an interesting hour watching the guy work, thankfully it was a calm, dry day here

I'm with Elephant and the excess was £100, NCB unaffected and my annual premium is low anyway because I'm old and don't crash +++

My idea before getting a new screen would be to put the connectors where they should be and then tell them the last time it was replaced it was the wrong one and not heated.:D
