Need help with ABS problem. 4.2 -03
 

Hi there. Recently bought this car and boy, what have I gotten myself into. lol. Anyway, have a bunch fault codes but the reason for this post is the red brake warning light and the parking brake light that appeared on my dash. Parking brake seems to work though. Here's the scan:

The ABS control module error seems to show up everywhere. I just don't know where to start. Can anyone make any sense of this?

Also, the ABS unit/pump keeps going and going after the car is shut off. Have to disconnect it to make it stop. Is it the control module that is shot? Relay(is that J329?)? Wiring? Can a bad module be responsible for some of the other fault codes I have?

A couple of things before delving into the VCDS scan.

Since you're a new member, pop along to the Introductions section and introduce yourself to everyone. We're a friendly lot, and we don't have many rules, but we do like to see other members cars, so photos are welcome. Also, to make things easier down the line when looking for assistance, amend your profile setup to include car details and a rough location. The car details may make it easier to help diagnose issues, and the location is just so if you need help, someone may just be round the corner, or maybe just to meet up for a chat.

Now, the scan. You make the comment about the ABS errors occurring in several modules, and it is remarkable how these cars work, and how they are all seemingly interconnected, so yes, an error may appear in what seems like an odd location/module.

The majority of the errors appear around the same date, but there some other odd anomalies around dates and other data. You have one error with a date of 2000, yet the car is an '03 model. You also have a error with a temperature reading of -85 degrees, which is somewhat chilly!

Since you have VCDS, what I'd suggest you do is always save a copy of the scan, as it may be useful later on. The next thing to do is clear all the codes (some codes may not clear is they are classed as a 'permanent' fault, and will only clear by replacing/repairing the offending item). Once you've done that, take the car for a drive, and then scan the car again, and you should hopefully have fewer errors second time around. Error codes can occur because the battery was disconnected at some time, and this could account for some of them. Post up what's left, and then we can go from there.

Regarding the ABS specific issue, and the pump continuing to run, one suggestion I came across was a faulty relay (which you hint at). I can identify the relevant relay on the D2 platform, but at the moment can't find the equivalent of the D3 platform.

The only relay I can find that is connected to the ABS unit is J329. It's the terminal 15 relay. Would a faulty realy cause all these ABS module codes though?

This is the first scan. Then I drove for about 100 miles and did a scan again(the one in the 1st post):

So almost all ABS/Brake errors happened between these 2 scans. I guess when the brake warning lights started appearing

I am new to D3 myself so not much experience yet but in general ABS pump should only be running when ABS/ESP/EDL is activated, not all the time. I don't think there are any external relays for ABS. Looks like your ABS unit is shorted causing pump to run all the time. I don't know if it has internal relay which could be stuck on or if it is activated with transistor which could be shorted. Pump running all the time could cause voltage drop in the unit especially if battery is weak and that could result in communication errors.

So your guess would be the ABS module itself?

The first time I noticed the running pump after the car was shut off, was on NYE(Dec. 31). That was the first time. Haven't driven it since(well, I drove it home). I bought the car Dec. 27.

If you are resetting each time, and all those errors are coming back - I would focus on the low voltage ones as it shouldnt be flagging up voltage errors on a good battery.

If you don't have a good battery and stable voltage, all kinds of weird things can happen.

if the battery is good, it might be a faulty or mis-calibrated power module....

You could try disconnecting the battery, charging it to full and then recoding the battery module to get things back in sync if it is definitely a good battery.

I wouldn't waste time diagnosing anything else until the power is stable....

The low voltage codes doesn't show up on my latest scan(1st post). Did a scan when I bought the car. Cleared the codes and went for a drive and scanned again(3 days later). The scan in my latest post is the 1st scan

Ian, are there any fuses for the ABS unit? Just wondering if it would be worthwhile pulling them once they get the battery charged, so that it isn't causing a continuous drain. That way they could hopefully clear all the errors caused by low voltage issues, and just be left with the 'real' errors. I'm not suggesting they drive the car like that on the road, but at least it will give them a better view of what the other issues are, including the ABS one, and hopefully not make it look as bad to overcome.

Some of the errors in the first post (most recent scan) are still old ones, so I'd also suggest going into each module and clearing them within the module, but as IT says, you'll need to get the battery issue sorted first.

If I wash the car in a automatic car wash, including underbody with no splash guard underneath the car, could that affect/screw up the electronics? I think the warning lights showed up after that. Not immediately though. Most likely not the issue, just speculating

Nothing is impossible, but I would highly doubt it, as all the electrical connectors on the outside of the car are designed to prevent water ingress. I've used car washes in the past without issue.

If you're concerned that water may have been the issue, I'd check the plenum chamber in the engine bay to ensure it isn't full of water, and I'd also check the carpets in the front to see if any water has gotten into the car.
