ZF 5hp24a

I’ve recently stuck this information on my FB page, so I’ve just copied it here in case it’s of interest to anybody

The 5HP24A transmission differs from the 5HP24 by having an integrated front final drive/differential plus a Torsen II centre differential

The Torsen ‘torque-sensing’ centre differential distributes the transmission’s output torque 50:50 between the front and rear axles

ZF produced the 5HP24A exclusively for VW Audi, who refer to it as their ‘01L’ transmission. In total, ZF manufactured almost 100,000 of these 4WD transmissions, between May 1996 and May 2009

90% of production was for vehicles fitted with the 4.2 litre V8 engine i.e. the Audi A6 on the C5 platform (39,103 units) & Audi A8 on the D2 platform (47,629 units). The remainder was shared equally between the A8 quattro with the 165kW/480Nm 3.3L V8 TDI engine and the VW Phaeton 4motion/A8 quattro with the 309kW/550Nm 6.0 litre W12 engine

To cover the vehicle range, ZF produced a total of 28 models of the transmission with 5 different front axle ratios (2.727, 2.909, 3.197, 3.511 & 3.730). By using different rear gearset ratios within the transmission, ZF were able to reduce the required number of rear axle ratios to only two (3.700 & 4.111). An unusual feature of the rear final drive is that, because of the driveline architecture, the axle rotates in the opposite direction to normal i.e. the crownwheel is on the RH side of the pinion, when viewed from the rear

Although the transmission was mated to the mighty 6.0 litre W12 engine, this wasn’t the most potent combination

The most powerful match for any 5HP24 transmission (including those used by BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover) was for the 2004 Audi RS6 Plus, whose Cosworth-developed engine produced 353kW and 560Nm of torque. Only 999 examples were made

Great information thanks +++ You forgot one diagram though:

:D

I thought the W12 used something larger than the 5HP24 - 26 or 28 I was told by someone. Is it the same version as the RS6 with a bigger bellhousing and TC but the same stuff behind it as all the others?

The 1058 020 027 (FGE) and 1058 020 037 (GXX) transmissions were used in the VW Phaeton and the 1058 020 028 (FGS) transmission was used in the Audi A8. A total of only 993 ‘028’ transmissions were manufactured between April 2000 and July 2002 and only 750 vehicles had been sold by the time Audi discontinued it in 2003. Later D3 models used the 6-speed ZF transmission, the first generation being the 6HP26 and the second generation the 6HP28, so this may be what you’re referring to?

Nice info Phil.

Yeah, it has always been a little disappointing that Audi chose the 5HP24 for the AWD architecture behind the V8's, not the 5HP30 which would probably be more robust with its higher torque loading.
My 20:20 hindsight doesn't account for engineering, packaging, costs, or availability (the '19 and '24 may have just been what ZF offered or did the engineering work for etc - who knows what happens in these discussions...). As the end user we just want the best that's available!

Although the 3.0 V6 TDI, 3.2 V6, 4.2 V8 & 5.0 V10 TDI engine versions of the Phaeton used the 6-speed transmission, the 6.0 W12 stuck with the 5HP24A all the way through, right up until 2011 when the W12 version was dropped. As a result, the 5HP24A remarkably stayed in production for 13 years.
