Replace Fuel Filter

I asked Audi about replacing my fuel filter and the tech told me our cars have a filter for life that doesn't need changing.

I find this really difficult to believe... and not just because it was Audi who told me!

Have any of you replaced your fuel filters? Would you recommend it on a recently purchased car? Should I replace it regularly like I do with my other cars?

Ive changed mine on both my D2 and on the D3's - change when you first get it then at something like every 30-40,000 miles when you also do the gearbox oil which they say doesn't need to be done as well!

Thanks very much. That what I was thinking too. +++

How much are they on the Audi? I heard around £60?

Yes, I have done this job on mine. Lots of issues with the securing bolts seized. But easy enough to overcome. See here http://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-s...2846979/page2/

I replaced the fuel filter on my D2 at c 103k miles and this was probably the first time it was done. In my view a filter is put there for a purpose and so it follows that it should be replaced after some period of use. Given the cost benefit (i.e. how much does it cost ( approx £10) against what can go wrong if it doesnt do its job) it just seems sensible to change it.
For interest sake I cut mine open and it was discoloured showing that it had been doing its job. The last photo show the filter paper cut into two sections the lower of which shows the outer side all dark and contaminated and the upper section the downstream side relatively clean. How much longer life it had I cant say but you pays yer money and takes yer choice as they say.

Audi may be right! :D

According to my 2005 D3 service manual, fuel filter changes are scheduled for V6 and V8 Diesels every 40,000 miles but no mention of petrol engine cars.

Just as Audi used to say that their gearboxes are 'sealed for life'. No need for oil change or service....

No mention of carbon cleaning either...

Sorry Guys, but perhaps they're right about that too ;)

I've got 230,000 miles on my A8 and it's never had a gearbox oil change.
