What's best to do?

OK, My A8 3.0tdi gearbox has gone. It still moves but won't change up from 3rd and there's some mechanical grinding noises.

It's done just over 200k. There's relatively new 19" wheels & tires and it had a new Turbo at 120k. Has a remap also.

I feel it's too good to scrap but I've replaced the car now and haven't got the gumption to try and fix it. £1800 to refurb the box.

Any suggestions???

TIA

I thought those gearboxes were "usually" pretty bombproof, though yours obviously isn't.

Worth asking our sponsors if they have a lower-mileage used one. ;)

This won't be right to do the job, but gives you an idea: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A8-D2...-/191682411161
This is maybe nearer: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A8-D3...-/172257817872

Thanks for the advice mate! +++

Tried initially to get a 2nd hand unit but could't get one (even from the sponsers) that had a matching part number (essential apparently or the ECU won't match) Lost the will to fix it now!

Yeah, you need to extract the binary from the original TCU and flash that over to the replacement box. PITA.

Thanks Matt!

It sure is a PITA.

Then you have the issue fitting a 2nd hand unit. It could fail, it could have issues, problems matching it etc.

Not worth it on a 200k car.:(

It gets expensive real quick without much guarantees while the labour costs keep increasing.

Have you tried a transmission flush as a 'cheapish' option to see if it does anything?

My mate with his own garage (pretty clued up on Audi's) drove it a few feet and with the 'mettalic' noises coming from the box, he's positive there's bearings but more probably gears lunching themselves.

As you say, lots of other expenditure, particularly labour can soon mount!

Maybe they can supply a matching box and ECU?

It's a shame the gearbox went. Of all the D3's with failure you hear more of the 3.0 tdi. Whether that is due to the number of 3.0tdi out there or the lower torque 6HP19A box?

Tried that! No joy!

Say I spend £2k, what the car worth after that?
