MMI update for navigation

Hi guys. I have a trip to Sheffield planned for the middle of next month and as I have the original 2003 maps on my car I thought I'd buy an update disk. It would certainly help out in general anyway as roads have changed a lot since 2003.

Anyway, I followed the very simple instructions and after initializing the nav just put up a message saying "please check navigation DVD"

I have got a full refund from the seller who said hes had a few returns from early A8 owners and thinks its something to do with the MMI software not being compatible.

The software version I have got is D3-HU 51.5.0 0739

Should this be a problem when buying update software for the nav? I dont want to go and buy another disk to get the same problem. If an MMI update will fix it how do i go about doing this?

cheers, Gill

Try contacting Adrian_E, best send a PM as he no longer has an 8 so isn't here as much as he used to be.

I think this could be 2 different things, the DVD reading carriage / laser gets worn on the navigation drive the older the car gets and they seem to "not like" anything other than OEM nav discs as they get more worn. Im thinking of sending a spare drive I have to the place that refurbs them in Croydon to see if that theory is sound and would then try an up to date nav DVD (copy) and then an up to date OEM real one then we can finally understand if thats what is contributing to the symptoms

Hello:
The software version doesn't seem to be the problem, It's the 5150, the same that I have in my S8 '08.
Is the disk from the seller an original or a copy?
Anyway, you can burn your own copy of the latest maps available (MMI 2G 2017)
-Go to this site and see the links where you can get the maps.
-Burn the DVD (good quality, Verbatim if it's possible) at the lowest speed that your DVD burner can do.
-Insert the DVD into the navigation reader and let's go.

Worked in my case at the first attempt!

Cheers

The disk is a copy and on an unbranded disk. I will try that link you posted and report back, thanks! The OH will be fuming if it works after paying decent coin for an update DVD hahaha.

Have you sent the disk back or still got it? If you still have it:
1. Try reading it on a PC, copy all the files/data on it to the hard disk - that may well work as the PC drive may be more tolerant than the Audi one.
2. If that's OK try copying it, as noted above, to a top-quality DVD-R of the correct type (write once, not a rewriteable one)

Not having a D3 I don't know exactly what media type it needs, i.e. + or - and single or dual layer. But someone here will know for sure.

In my early 8 days Adrian sent me two discs, one each of R+ and R-.
They both worked in mine so I passed one of them on to someone else and that worked for him.
Couple of years back so I cannot remember which one I kept at the time.
I've since done two more updates, both worked but rarely use it now.
I an on Waze

I still have the DVD. Funnily enough I kind of did wonder about copying it and re-writing it.

I also downloaded a copy of both of the 2017 DVD (west and East Europe). That's where the story ends for today. Living in the back water that I do, I can't buy any flavour of DVD. I read on another post somewhere today that it needs to be a DVD +R. I'm a mechanical engineer and have limited knowledge of computer sorcery and don't know what that means anyway haha.

I have the day off tomorrow, but will have to go into Dundee in the evening so i can leave a little earlier and get some DVDs while I'm there and give it a bash.

You didn't say what version of Navigation you bought, but the MMI version doesn't really influence the Navigation unit other than whether or not it supports 3D / birds eye views.

This is because the NavBox has its own firmware that's updated by the Navigation DVDs [and you should have had an update, which you'd see on the MMI screen, if you went from 2003]. Have you got VCDS to check the NavBox firmware or alternatively run the hidden red menu to see what version of firmware is now in the Navbox. [See attached note for how to do this].

The firmware was updated pretty much every year until 2009 which has the last version of the NavBox firmware - 1060. [Full table below]

I too suspect that it's because you trying to use a copy rather than an original. Some NavBoxes don't seem to like them! :(

Since you've got such an old Nav DVD, first step might be to buy the cheapest OEM DVD that's post 2009.

Gill - Not True! As 'Ray at Wigan Pier' said above; it can be either -R or +R although I've only proved to myself that -R works OK.
