Glue for exterior door moldings? (Pix inside)

Hello fellow 8ers,

Does anyone know what kind of glue was used to secure together both pieces of the door moldings?

For some reason, when I purchased Cappuccino (my '01) it had the black rubber moldings removed for both front doors as well as the small pieces in the front fenders (wings). I'm finally getting around to installing them, but the driver side door (LHD) molding is split into two. Based on the residue in both halves, it looks like they were held together by some sort of adhesive. Any clue what kind of adhesive i should be using? I'm sure it's not your run-of-the-mill glue.

Help is appreciated!

They aren't supposed to be glued together so I suspect that's someone's attempt to repair them. The outer plastic part should just clip in to the aluminium inner.

To glue them together if they won't hold themselves together I'd recommend a 2-part methacrylate adhesive designed for plastics with low surface activity - these often come with a primer / activator solution which is usually MEK, a fairly vicious solvent. From memory, the strips are polypropylene which is a pain to stick with normal adhesives.

I think I see the clip you are referring to. It's in the middle of the trim piece (I circled it in red in one of the attached pix). Mine seems to have that clip broken. There's definitely some sort of adhesive, so you are right. Someone probably tried to repair it at some point.

I may just try some strong cement-style adhesive and see if it holds. Otherwise, it looks like I'll have to source another piece.
