Aculator valve bar

Ohh dear
While I was doing some work in the engine bay i noticed one of the vacuum aculator bar is broken and noticed crack on the second one. What effect it has on the car and did anybody sourced replacement bars or a way to fix it? I just glued it together:ROFL: with a gorilla glue, I dont think is any long lasting solution. I want to have everything tip-top so would like to get it replaced.. The bar is broken off where my fingers are on the picture.. Thank you all for ideas how to fix it. |
Pretty standard failure, replacements readily available e.g. metal ones from Gruvenparts.
BUT FIRST check the flaps they move are free to move, the breakage may be due to the mechanism being stuck. There are two lengths IIRC depending on engine type; yours look like the longer ones. |

Thank you |
The other end from the membrane, the spring-loaded arm. Check you can move them both, may need some force but a hand should do it.
If one is still connected start the engine and observe the movement. |

Checked the plastic spring loaded arm today, they move but you really need a force to turn it..no wonder the plastic linkage snapped. I ordered new linkage.Being shipped from the US so it will take few weeks to have the replacements in the UK. Thanks for the help. |
Although yours is a D3, reading this D2 thread from Audiworld may help as well - http://forums.quattroworld.com/a8/msgs/44689.phtml

Thank you very much for providing the great link. I have successfully replaced vacuum bars today. A pretty easy job with below tool and also when following the above write-up. You need some patience to get the flaps back in the place. One of the pivots was seised, so it took me a bit of time to get it out.. The job took about 95 min while 30min I was only trying to get the inside flap bars back into the grove :ROFL: BTW the links purchased from https://vanos-bmw.com Another job DONE |
Well done - glad you got it sorted ok. The original arms are made in plastic so that they break if the flaps seize so a broken arm normally indicates an issue. The variable manifold will perform properly once fixed and on my D2 I noticed the difference once it had all been serviced +++
