Installing centre vents in dash

After removing lots of bits of trim and air vents to allow for MMI SCREEN repair......I noticed when reinstalling the centre vents that the control at the back (which moves ) is not inline with the control on the actual vent.
I think this movable pin is controlled by stepper motors?
My question is, to move these to a new position (more central) do I use VCDS or is there a scenario with heating/cooling/recirculating that will move the position of these pins so I can push the centre air vents back into the dash and fully home?

Ooops!!
One instruction in the strip down says something like "Centre the vent before removal".
Sorry, I don't know how to resolve your current problem.

A bit late in entering this info and appreciate it's probably telling some people how to suck eggs, but..... did the task a few weeks ago now.....
So, if you electrically connect the centre vents (before trying to push them in) this allows you operate the control wheel which then moves the spigot in the dash, allowing you to correctly align the spigot/receptacle BEFORE pushing the centre vents fully home.
I think you have to kill the ignition once you've roughly aligned the two, as you have to operate the wheel again to either the fully open or closed position to physically get the vent into the dash, due to the cog protrusion (if that makes sense?)
