Changing Front Brakes
So I've noticed there are a couple threads on this, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what size/type bolt is holding the caliper in place on the inside of the caliper. I've done many a brake job on different vehicles and never run into this issue, but I just can't figure out what it is back there and nothing I've tried seems to fit! Anyone who's done this have any insight? Thanks in advance!

Anyone?

 don't know what it is.
Photo? |
Assuming you've tried hex keys, etc? A photo would be needed otherwise.

I'll see if I can get a quality picture when I get home...I've taken some really terrible quality pictures and it looks like it should be a hex key. problem is that I've tried every hex size I can find that looks close and no luck. Stay tuned for a picture!

Is it a 4 square - i.e. 12 splines?
|
You probably mean triple square which has 12 splines.
|
I bought a whole set of those in different sizes and 2 lengths as they are used fairly widely.

from memory its something like 14mm spline drive or triple square
on the rear cant remember if front is same size or not if its the 4.2 and (356mm)rear discs you dont actually have to remove the carrier theres enough space to swap them over once you have backed them off with vcds |
Getting the front Caliper off
2 Attachment(s)
Just come across this myself, In france front wheel off trying to change the pads
Stuck at the caliper anyone have a definitive idea on the tool required and size? Attachment 16720 Attachment 16721 |
just going through some old posts and saw this
the socket required to remove or loosen the caliper slider pins on the front brakes is a " H9 socket " 9mm hexagonal socket some silly bugger thought it would be good to come up with an odd size socket so it makes it harder to change things :Confused::Confused: |

Serves one of two purposes: earn VW some ££, and discourage hobbyist mechanics from tackling the job! :angry4: Oh... 3 purposes - frustrate the crap out of actual mechanics :tuttut: |
