Nuts and bolts.......
spoke to the local Audi parts department to get a new pair of top pinch bolts to get them in preparation for a new set of top suspension arms. Little heads up D2 owners, the bolts (which have a tendency to seize) are no longer available from the dealer parts network. Indeed I was informed several of the front suspension bits are no longer stocked and are in effect obsolete :( :-( so anyone planning any unbolting might want to get on the hunt for some ASAP before all the old stock is gone. There are 2 less out there now, I just got them :D I also bought several other of the suspension bolts......just in case....... we are becoming outmoded obsoletes :-(

As is the way with most D2 stuff now unfortunately. They hit 15 years old and Audi lost interest.
Worth noting that Meyle control arms come with brand new hardware. |

I'm sure I've seen a just hardware kit somewhere too.
FCP Euro maybe? If you get stuck (I nearly said "in a pinch"!) you can substitute an appropriate length class 8.8 high tensile bolt (something like 12M x180 - though measure it!). The best finish you'll find at a bolt shop is zinc plate, which is only a couple of microns thick at best, so won't last long without a liberal coating of antiseize or some such. The mechanical galvanising of the factory and Meyle bolts takes some beating. The correct nut for the bolt is a 'cone lock'. They're not always available, so get a nylock at least. Edit: Yep - https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...lt-kit-vwgkit1 Blauparts do them too, and others I expect |
Good job I got one really. 6 hours to get one pinch bolt out! 21 years of corrosion required sooooooooo much work to get off! It does give some concerns for the future though. If the simple stuff like nuts and bolts can’t be got there’s no chance if I need something bigger. Time to start looking for a replacement car soon I guess!

Most mechanical bits are well catered for in the after market. There's parts commonality with other Audi models in engines and other items (switchgear, suspension etc). TRW & Loemforder even supply "genuine" suspension and drivetrain parts, Audi have just chosen to stop stocking them.
It's only A8 specific parts that will be hard to get in the future, and at present we're well catered for in that regard by our forum sponsors. |
