What's in the workshop this week?

September's project is Dean's truly scrumptious red 2.8Q. She is in need of a considerable amount of TLC, and Dean has given me permission to post the progress for your collective amusement +++

On the way home:

She's quite the hottie  I've never had a car get as much attention as this, driving or otherwise. I had half a dozen other Audi drivers slow down to get a look, a minibus full of guys all staring out of the window on the way past, and a thumbs up from a guy an a TT. She certainly attracts attention!

This is the job list:

Couple of things to do then :eek3: The drivetrain is coming out as it'll make everything easier to get to. By the time I've taken everything apart there are only going to be 4 bolts left to remove to take it all out anyway.

The usual shenanigans with the ECU box lid will need sorting, plus Botang's hole will get done while I'm in there.

This is the damage after Tony (PO) had a tyre blow out. The carcass made its way inboard and ate the arch liner. Luckily it didn't damage any of the fuel tank gubbins behind it.

The downpipes are done for :(

Tie rods will be done at the same time as a full set of front arms.

Oil leaks to embarrass the Exxon Valdez  Standard fitment on the 2.8, but at least there aren't many seized bolts!

This one's going to be interesting - its fallen off the widowmaker at some point and punched a hole in the sill :tuttut: More on that later...

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_16.jpg

Rear suspension bushes are a bit nasty too

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_17.jpg

Rear diff leak

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_18.jpg

Interesting aftermarket exhaust, with a 'hanger' designed to damage the heat shield  We'll be replacing it with a nice quiet stock system.

Front end coming off

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_20.jpg

Oh look. Paint marks on the timing gear

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_21.jpg

Dean mentioned the power steering fluid was an odd colour. I was expecting red or brown

Whiskey
Tango
Foxtrot

Its been topped up with water and turned in to mayonnaise :eek2: I've never seen anything like this before. Its going to take a fair bit of work to flush all this out.

Engine front end coming apart

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_25.jpg

Crud everywhere

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_26.jpg
http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_28.jpg

Covers off the belt. The idlers look good, but the belt is done so just as well we're in there

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_27.jpg

Evidence of a 'rad weld' type treatment having been used in the past, so a full coolant flush will be needed too, including the heater cores (joy). The radiator is unexpectedly heavy so probably silted up  Not leaking though which is a major bonus at this age.

This collection of bits is barely even scratching the surface! :D

Here's a vid of the engine pull from August's S8 btw. 3 hours compressed in to 3 minutes :D

Love it +++

HPsauce 11th September 2017 10:21 PM

Excellent stuff, I might be in touch when my S8 needs it's next service (soonish) as I have my suspicions that lots of bits need a thorough check and sort-out.

WOW:eek:
Shame you are too far from me our my car would be with you!

tintin 12th September 2017 08:26 AM

Lovely car, busy lass - no room in September for a simple exhaust swap then MJ?- which may result in a "spare" stock S8 exhaust ;)...

Spanker 12th September 2017 08:45 AM

Wow! That jobs list.
And something tells me that the spare space on the whiteboard won't be white for that long

Big t5 (Tony - previous owner who only had the car 5 minutes before I badgered him to sell it to me) and I had no idea that so much work would be needed to bring her back to a GOOD road worthy standard.
Apart from a noisy exhaust, an obvious oil leak and a fluttering engine at lowish revs, she seemed to drive well and behaved herself.
Just shows how much we know compared to an expert :respekt:

Right... Where are those lottery tickets?

Dezzy 12th September 2017 08:52 AM

Nice job list. Welding the sill could be interesting

Hmm... This is going to be on the lift for a couple of weeks at least, but there may be an opportunity near the end of the month :)
