How to change a V8 (I hope) :)

This thread is about my engine swap. It is not meant as a 'How To' as as I am making it up as I go along. I have removed a couple but never put one back.
I will be using a mix of AudiPages information and erWin printouts plus the experience I've gained from removing them. Now I know what your thinking; and yes I'm only doing it because I have no choice and I've always had suicidal tendancies.

So prior to starting I ordered up some parts from Audi. I have to swap the inlet manifold as mine is modded for LPG. So I have orderd the inlet manifold gaskets, Throttle Body gasket, Sump Plug Gaskets for engine and tranny, O-ring seals for ATF oil cooler pipes, Allen bolts for Torque Converter to flywheel.

After the engine arrived I have order up an exhaust seal, bolts and nuts.

Anyway a few photos:

As the engine came minus the cling wrap.

Mounted on the engine stand.

A shot most of us hope never to see...........

The first thing I had to do was remove the wiring harness as mine is modded with hard wiring for the LPG. Some kits have a plug in additional harness that goes between the injectors and wiring harness mine is soldered into the original. This was not as difficult as it may seem as being German its fitted in a logical and ordered manner.

Once the harness has been removed.

The harness as it came off.......... Lots of cable ties (Lots)

Out with the Inlet manifold, just 4 bolts and 4 nuts, a tap or 2 with a soft face mallet and ..........

Something to polish?

Next up is the cleaning. :) AS I have the engine on the stand I'm also going to do some preventive work and replace most of the hoses that are hard to do when in the car.

Going to have to buy myself one of these engine stands for the lump I take out. Now what should I do with it? After cleaning it of course.... :D

Nice Job Mike... This is going to be really interesting reading....

Always good to see things arrive the other end of the country in one piece +++

We never get to see anything of engines once they've been shipped, and as this engine came from a car than both David and I personally owned, its all the more interesting to see how she comes on.....

Are you in the North East? I have an engine stand you can borrow for 2-3 weeks if you need to?

Need it back in about a month tho as my M3 Project is arriving. Yey!

Or Machine Mart has them for £40....

I have never changed a Audi V8 engine so take this into consideration BUT:

One all the engines I have swapped behind the flywheel there is a rubber seal that goes over the crank and holds the oil in the engine. Prob about a fiver, but a perfect time to swap. Will take half hour to do properly but saves an annoying oil leak all over your torque convertor in the future?

The second to bottom pic with the bike in the background just needs the caption "Are you sure this will fit ?" to it

I once swapped a mini engine following the haynes manual....it had sat on a block of wood for 2 years. Me and my mate with very limited knowledge swapped it and it started first time....suprised the hell out of us...ran like a tracktor so i got an AA guy to come out and tune it to get me home so i could pop it into my normal garage !

Good luck !

These little suckers have Sealing Flange (Fnar Fnar) see part #32

http://www.vagcat.com/p/B153/103330.png

The actual seal is not available as a spare and the flange is 131 euros on Vagcat! And I have to go through 2 other gaskets to get to it.....

It will probably be coming of when I strip down the old lump to asses the damage so I'll know then.
