Rev-related whine/whistle

Had to move the S8 today from it's temporary home back to my reconstructed driveway.

It drove fine but I noticed a prominent whine/whistle that changed note absolutely in line with engine revs. Seemed to be coming from centrally behind the dash.
Parked on my drive and revving the engine I still just could hear it, though less obviously, so I wonder if it's related to load/gearbox in some way?

I couldn't hear it from outside the car, not even with the bonnet open.

Something else to add to the list for the D2 Doctor. Thoughts anyone on what it might be?

AC compressor. Does it go away if you press 'Econ'?

Good thought. +++ Unfortunately it's no longer doing it after sitting on my drive nice and warm for a couple of hours. Even with a bit of spirited revving.

All Econ does (apart from it's intended purpose) is cause the engine revs to increase due to reduced load. :D

I'll see what happens if I drive it anywhere before the MOT runs out next week, though that's not very likely. On the other hand, who needs an excuse to take an S8 for a spin...…..
