A8 Re start problem

Hi All,
First Post so here goes. I have an A8 D3 54 plate with re start problems. Car starts fine from cold. After short or long run, car is left for about 30 mins plus - car only cranks over on the key 5/6 times and stops. This can happen for up to 15 minutes but it will eventually restart. Anybody else had this problem ?Sorry no to say before but its a 3L TDI

I've come across this before somewhere. It might be worth checking the coolant temp sensor, as if it's fubar it'll be flooding the engine thinking it's colder.

Plausible, I had similar symptoms on a D2 due to a faulty CTS.

From my own experience I would say that you have the symptoms of a crankshaft position sensor beginning to fail. The part is only just over £100 in cost but the job of changing it is a bit of a pig and needs the engine and gearbox taking off its mounts and crane-ing up while the rest of the car is on the Ramps to free up enough space to get to it as it is buried in between the engine and gearbox in the underside of the transmission tunnel

My symptoms started off just being randomly and then became a little more regular, car didn't like restarting when hot. The coils inside the sensor get affected by the heat and gradually get worse. Mine finally wouldn't start at all one morning and had to be trailered to be replaced. Labour to do the job is 5-7 hours from memory

It would help a lot if you mention what engine it is, better still, update your signature so its always on view when folk are trying to help out with questions +++
