Cleaning oil emulsion from the engine...
 

Hi all,

I acquired a V8 engine the other day which had popped its oil cooler and mixed oil with the coolant 🤮

If this was still in the car then I'd just run cleaning solution through it a bunch of times until it was clean, but its on a stand in the workshop so I'm pondering the best approach. Obviously all the external pipework will come off, as will the water pump and stat, but the heads will stay on.

I thought I'd canvas you lot for suggestions how to clean it +++

Would spinning up the water pump with an electric motor or drill work?

(after adding a header tank and connecting the various input/output hoses together of course).

Jet wash connected to one of the inlets?

Funny you mention that - I've actually been pondering mounting a crank pulley in the lathe to spin the water pump via a long belt and pump some water-soluble degreaser round it +++

Liking that idea too +++ I could put the degreaser in the shampoo bottle...

Oh, and if I make up a plate to go on the back of the heads per the last picture, I can flush each side from back to front exiting via the water pump housing. Hmmm....

Water soluble degreaser and a pump. If the water pump is trash, use that - definately agree.
Lathe is a good idea, as you dont want high rpm.
Battery powered impact wrench or strong drill might work too.

Do you get Chemtech CT14 there? Very good product for this job.

We don't get CT14, but I do already have some soluble degreaser for the parts washer.

You could attach the long belt to a mouse on a wheel instead. Then you just need a gun to fire at one of your cats to trigger the dynamite and get the bowling ball rolling (into the mouse cage) +++

A lathe driving a water pump on a 2m long v-belt is probably going to be terrifying enough though I think :D

Use scalding hot water as well if you can.
