Wider rears

Hi All, my recently bought car has been fitted with these:
Yokohama 265/35 R20 (99Y) Rears - Dunlop 255/ 35 ZR20 (97Y) Fronts.

Not sure of the actual rims width.

They will soon need replaced. Does it cause any issues long term? Is purely for appearance? Steve

There's something to do with the actual circumference of the tyres and how if the differences are significant, it can upset the quattro system. One of the more experienced members on here should be able to give you a more precise answer.

I'd say you need either 265/35/20 or 275/35/20 on front and rear, in ZR flavour and probably best to have 102Y load rating too. That's what my book and filler flap tells me for a 4.2 TDI on 20's. +++

Difference in circumference should not be no more than 1%. With your tyres it works out 1.02% so just over it if the tyres have the same wear level. Front tyres wear faster so the difference will increase over time. Best to go for the same size front and rear or if you really want wider on the rear for looks then 295/30R20 would be better suited with only 0.22% difference.

Interesting info, many thanks+++

Yes, 1% will probably not cause the Quattro system to object but not really a good idea longer term, especially given the wear issue.

I'd me more worried about uneven/unpredictable handling with different tyre widths on the same rims. :tuttut:

If you really want it to "look" wider just use spacers. ;)

I'm not that interested in retaining the wider rears, interesting to hear how the quattro system would cope long term. Wear appears even, however I dont know if the tyres were fitted new. Spacers could be worth the look....

Definitely worth it. They really help fill those wheel arches and give it that wider appearance from the rear.

I'd say that the rears are the correct standard width and the fronts are too narrow. ;)
